SD card not detected while running, won't boot with SD card inserted | Dell Latitude E6420 (Void Linux)

While the computer is running and I'm in an XFCE session, my SD card (exfat from Canon camera) is not detected. There is nothing in lsblk but my boot drive and sr0. Shotwell does not detect it either. When the laptop is booted with the SD card inserted, Linux gets stuck at the attached photo.

There are no messages in dmesg (as root) when the SD card is inserted. The SD card controller is recognized in lspci.
Code:

0a:00.0 SD Host controller: O2 Micro, Inc. OZ600FJ0/OZ900FJ0/OZ600FJS SD/MMC Card Reader Controller (rev 05)
lsusb lists nothing about it.

This is where I get stuck while booting. Removing the SD card allows for a successful next boot.

Is there a driver in kernel for the sd controller?

Some of the sd cards may be too large for older laptops.??

It appears there is a driver.
Code:

0a:00.0 SD Host controller [0805]: O2 Micro, Inc. OZ600FJ0/OZ900FJ0/OZ600FJS SD/MMC Card Reader Controller [1217:8221] (rev 05) (prog-if 01)
        Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:0493]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 27, IOMMU group 14
        Memory at e2c20000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: sdhci-pci
        Kernel modules: sdhci_pci

It's a 32GB card. I highly doubt that's too much for a 2012 laptop.

I keep a usb to sd card adapter when in your shoes or when my kernel don't recognize the sd slot on my hardware.

I bought it when it was cheap to do so. Not sure of costs now.

The one above is USA only at 11 bucks.

I'll probably get torn to shred for saying this however, it is always much better to stick with brands like sandisk or Kingston.

can you use this SD card in another computer or another reader? Or with another OS?
Probably you need to reformat it. Or buy a new one.

Maybe it's just a fake - https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ftsa&q=che...+sdcard&ia=web

It works perfectly in my Canon camera and (Ubuntu) desktop computer. This laptop is the only device which it doesn't work in.

in that case try another card, test the reader. Also try to reformat the card.
