Is there anyone installed Progeny Debian 1.0?please tell me which is better between Debian and Progeny.Thank you!

I don't know if you have read the recent post which I started but I have manged to install Debain. During the attemp (which wasn't easy), I did order a copy of Progeny Debian because I heard that it was easier to install and more user friendly. I will let you know what I think of it in the next few days when it arrives.

BTW - Debian is actually a very good distro due to the way it is set up, the package management and the speed of it. Would recommend it, but not for someone new to Linux.

I am a newbie and had suse 7.1 installed until yesterday.
I am now on deb 2.2r3.

I agree that debian is seriously not easy to learn but for someone who is curious about whats really going on its far better than the warm and userfriendly stuff that suse shows.
Of course its a damn hard kick in the face for someone like me to be confronted with the configs the hard way but it gives me the ticklish feeling inside i have missed since the times when i learned to program some c++ with a watcom compiler (watcom was really hard to use compared to borland hehehe) now this may seem like software masochism but if you just have a gui and everything is done for you by the programs you use how can you possibly ever learn how to do the low level stuff? if the gui makes it work you won't bother much about learning how to set up things really smooth.

I have run into loads and loads of questions (more than i can count but i have the feeling that i will advance faster :D

Progeny Debian 1.0
 

As far as I know Progeny 1.0 is made up of packages from Debian "testing" & "unstable" along with some snazzy install tools and "automagic" setting up of services and utilities.



I tried upgrading a Debian "stable" install to Progeny and was successful. While I did like the way certain things turned out I also found that the range of software was not as extensive as for Debinan "unstable" this, however, is a minor problem because you can apt-get install programs from the Debian "unstable" apt-get sources even though you are using Progeny.



All in all though I'm happier with "unstable" than Progeny just becuse I'm familiar with how it works and . . . well . . . because its Debian.



The fact that Debian is run by volunteers rather than a company and will be less likely to suffer the fate of companies like Stormix (which distributed the Debian-based Storm Linux before it closed up shop) may also be of interest to you--or it might not. Anyway, if you are willing to run Debian "unstable" you will probably not notice that much difference between Debian Debian and Progeny Debian. However, if you are running Debian "stable" moving to Progeny will give you a nice set of upgraded packages and more GUI eye candy and utilities.



PS: While the Debian installer has been criticized as being hard to use, in my experience it's really not that bad. Go to their website http://www.debian.org and check out the documentation section for guidance and tips. I can't comment on the Progeny installer because I have not used it. Good luck with whatever you decide.
