Microsoft stating the obvious
without starting another boring anti M$ thread... going from this story where Seve Ballmer finally admits Linux IS cheaper all round, they changed a page on their site to compare winows features against linux...

When I try to talk people into switching, the question that makes me the most pissed off is "will I still be able to use my Norton SystemWorks?". I know that not everyone knows stuff about linux, but I at least would like to think that it's pretty obvious that a different OS wouldn't normally support your proprietary OS software. If I buy a MAC, I wouldn't expect to be able to run freakin MotoCross Madness made for Win95/98/ME/2000/XP... Why do they try to establish the greatness of Winbloze by saying it will run software that was made for it? That's like saying "without installing a highly sophisticated program, and knowing how to build your own OS, you won't be able to run xine on windows, what a piece of crap". No, the Linux community (I think) doesn't say crap like that. They speak of stability, learning the hardware, price, programming, broadening their horizons, and venturing out into the not-so well known. "I hate my stupid tape player, it won't play my CD's. What a piece of junk." This kind of stuff just makes no sense to me and really, really torques me.
I didn't read the article just the two lines you quoted, so hopefully this all wasn't said somewhere in the article. Cool |
AFAIK it's from a long, long table from MS comparing Windows and Linux. It's all like that.

I know, I don't mean outwardly pissed off, just in my mind. I don't display a resentful attitude about it. No actually I tell them that there are other options than MSOffice, or whatever the program is. I don't like beat em up cause they are mindless goats, although that might help... just kidding. Most of the time, I can best grab someones attention by showing them the plethora of applications available from a FREE distro. Still haven't been able to actually install it on anyones PC yet though. But I will keep trying.

I hear you,MasterC:
A person I know bought an IMac and tried to return it because it wouldnt play her windows-based "Who wants to be a Millionaire"game.:) lynch |
ha ha ha ha!!! I guess there are just somethings that aren't as obvious as I would think they are. I am guessing I was like that before I learned a pinch or 2 about computers/linux.

It's not rare... There're more such people than those coding etc. It means Linux has a chance to become popular for home use only when a distro is released that does not need ANY knowledge to install (insert cd, boot, next, next ...) and will run all Windows programs.
Yes, I know it does not look good... |

Never overestimate the intelligence of the general public. Never underestimate their idiocy, either.
Oh, and I like the bit about tape players, MasterC! It pretty much sums it all up, really, doesn't it? |
... i see the elitist attitude of linux people has not dissipated... so much for hoping.
