I ended with Calculate Linux after searching for a linux distro that would be easy to install and upgrade (with binary packages) and has available the packages I would need for physics and math and compsci (e.g. ada and julia development environments) research and writing (e.g. latex, TeXmacs, etc.). I went to repology.org and searched for software packages I want to have available and noted which linux or bsd operating systems provide them and if they have up-to-date versions -- I found that the best coverage for my needs would come from Debian linux, FreeBSD, or Gentoo linux. Gentoo itself may not be the best choice for me now (I used Gentoo and Funtoo linux for several years). Gentoo takes too much time compiling for the install and for updates. Calculate gives easy access to all of the Gentoo linux packages and now has more than 10,000 of the Gentoo packages already compiled. Although Calculate is targeted toward small businesses I think that gives it the features of
* easy and fast to install and upgrade
* stable operation without downtime (use Calculate's configuration and USE settings without messing around and it will be as reliable as Debian, and maybe more reliable because of using OpenRC and not systemd) and because of Calculate's incredible control panel with utilities for backups and system administration.
* almost any commonly used package is already compiled and can be installed as fast and easy as with Debian/Ubuntu
* all of the special math and science software, and programming languages, that are available in Gentoo are also available with Calculate -- if they have to be compiled from source the Calculate installer will just do that automatically.
* The Gentoo Science Project supports a large amount of math/science and high performance computing software and makes it available in the "science overlay" and in the "sage-on-gentoo" overlay. Gentoo portage + the science and sage overlays provides far more math and science packages than I have seen anywhere else. Calculate Linux supports the use of overlays so all of that software can be made available to your Calculate Linux system. I am just starting on using the science overlay with Calculate so I can't comment on how smoothly it works, but from what I have read it should work well.
