Zenwalk 8.0 not booting correctly
 

Ok, I have a fresh install of Zenwalk 8.0.

After launching Netpkg to install the dependencies for FF and than installing FF (52.2 ESR) it would not launch after a reboot.

Since I couldn't get FF to launch I launched Chromium. That worked for a few min's and than became unresponsive.

Used Netpkg again to rm FF and it's dependencies.
Since removing FF the desktop became unresponsive, the home directory wouldn't launch and had to drop to a root prompt shell.

In the root prompt shell I tried shutdown -h now but that didn't work.
Holding down Ctrl + Alt + Del did reboot for me.

Now Zenwalk is stuck at this screen and the keyboard and the mouse is are unresponsive. It's not entering into single user mode like it says it will. It reboots after a minute or two and takes me back to the message below.

I am not familiar with Zenwalk or Netpkg, but it would seem that Zenwalk does not share Slackware's concept of the "full install". I see from their website they take a modular, one application per task approach, but not sure how far that idea extends in practice.

You said that it did not work after a reboot, but it is not clear to me whether this was the first boot after installation, or if Firefox had been installed and/or worked on a previous boot and only failed after another boot. That might be a helpful clue for others to offer assistance.

You might try to launch Firefow from a terminal widow to see any error messages which may indicate the problem.

Finally, you might indeed get better help in the Zenwalk forums, and I see the move has already been requested - and completed while I was typing! Perhaps that will result in more helpful answers!

I didn't know there was a Zenwalk Forum until you moved the thread.

This was the 3rd boot after the fresh installation and FF didn't launch on the first try.

FF didn't work the first time that it was installed and it didn't work after it was uninstalled and than re-installed.

About the Firefox problem : Please try to disable the browser preloader (in xfce session autostart services dialog) and let me know the result...

Have you upgraded those whole system along with FF ? Netpkg is using a Current repository : also take care to add a few packages that were added to the list of packages, and could be deps.

-> Using the "current" install ISO will be faster than upgrading 8.0.

About booting problems : At system level : zenwalk is vanilla slackware, so : if zenwalk doesn't boot on a specific hardware, slack would most likely fail to boot as well.

Thank you for the information about firefox. I'll try that when I can boot into the system.

The Main Issue is that Zenwalk is stuck in a loop and I can not boot into it. I'm stuck at an all black screen with white letters and this is the message on the screen:

So after a minute or two the terminal reboots and takes me back to the same message again.

Also while at this screen prompt the mouse and the keyboard are unresponsive so I can't type the cmd (e2fsck -v -y) or do anything else for that matter (including entering into single user mode) at least as far as I know. Is there any way out of this loop?

Your root partition may be corrupted. I would recommend to reinstall. Anyway you could try booting from the install ISO and launch e2fsck from this shell.
Did you allocate enough space for the root partition during setup?

Zenwalk looked nice and my friend likes how it looked and ran when it did run correctly.
He wanted to try a easier version of Slackware as he has only been running Linux for a few years.

The documentation for Zenwalk was sparse and it didn't give enough details on how to run Netpkg or how to update the system and if it did it wasn't clear to me.

I performed this install of Zenwalk for a friend and this experience has pretty much left him sour.
He does not want to do a fresh installation. We are looking at other distributions to install now.

My friend thinks that launching Chromium and removing FF should not have broke the system and made things unresponsive:-

It's totally certain that removing firefox and installing chromiun is not the origin of the partition corruption problem. Bad hardware, lack of knowledge about Linux and configuration errors : are more likely the causes.
