Zenwalk 3.0 is ready
The development team of the Zenwalk GNU/Linux Operating System are pleased to announce that the latest stable major release, Zenwalk 3.0, is now available for download as a CDROM ISO, and from CD stores.
The ISO image and packages tree can be found here : http://www.zenwalk.org/modules/tinyc...index.php?id=1 This release includes both numerous software and visual advancements. Key software improvements include XFCE-4.3.99.1, the Linux kernel-2.6.17.11 Firefox-1.5.0.6, Thunderbird-1.5.0.5, Xarchiver-0.4 as well as many others all updated to the latest releases (around 200 packages updated or added). Visual aspects of the desktop have been improved by using a complete Tango icon set as well as new custom wallpapers and themes leading to the most uniform graphical desktop ever. All applications from system tools to text editors and media players look as though they were made for each other as a unified operating system (including the Mozilla suite). When it comes to installation of the system, the Zenwalk setup wizard is, as usual, a graphical ncurses based menu. The user does not have to type any Linux command to complete the few installation steps, and the installation wizard will detect any hardware device including video cards, networking devices, sound cards, usb peripherals and much more, leading to a completely functional system, ready to perform any task. Many subsystems have been improved, for example the udev based automount system now have the ability to detect media insertions (CD/DVD...) via uwd, the Udev Watchdog Daemon : a Zenwalk specific development. Software suspend to disk is now ready to use out of the box : making the computer hibernate is simply achieved by hitting a keyboard shortcut. Zenwalk features a modern package management system with a graphical user interface called netpkg. Netpkg is extremly flexible, fast, includes dependency tracking and can be used to search packages from multiple repositories that you can choose from the graphical GTK2 menu or from CLI menus depending on the runlevel you are in. All system tools react like this : GTK2 when X is running, ncurses when not in X. An important aspect of Zenwalk is the expanding community surrounding the distribution. The community supporting Zenwalk has expanded into the following websites: 1. TuxGames.net: TuxGames offers a wide variety of video games ranging from First Person Shooters to Children's and educational games. You will find all of your classic video game favorites as well as the most modern bleeding edge titles there. See http://www.tuxgames.net/ for more details. 2. ZenCommunity: This is a friendly and open user based software community where users can actively participate in building, testing and supporting software with the goal of creating the largest software repository on earth. See http://users.zenwalk.org/ for more details. 3. ZenLive: The Zenwalk Live CD project . ZenLive's releases closely follow new Zenwalk releases and showcase Zenwalk prior to hard drive installation. See http://www.zenlive.tuxfamily.org/ for more details. 4. Thanks guth followed your instructions to a T and it worked great. Oh yeah, netpkg upgrade-new worked it gave me a list of mirrors to install from.

How is the installer on it? After several attempts here the installation kept seeing errors. The last attempt saw an out of partition space error. The root was 1gb with the swap at 2.5gb.

One step forward two steps back.
I guess this is progress, Zenwalk 2.8 allows Google Earth to run from normal user account. Zenwalk 3.0 doesn't. I have to create a launcher using the command "gksu /usr/local/google-earth/googleearth" and then enter my root password. I have tried installing from my normal user account to no avail. Any thoughts. Version 3.0 still won't work with my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX USB sound card. No one here or at the Zenwalk support forums seem to know how to fix or they don't want to help me. I am about ready to give up on Zenwalk for good. To some of us users sound is important. This is the definition of deal killer. It should work out of box like it does in Ubuntu. Thanks. |
i sa your message on the forums, but don't know how to help...
I had an audigy 1 internal working great, that's all i can say... sorry :'( |
I was under the impression that the minimum size for the root could be 300mb? Do you think 5gb will cover the root? I have plenty of space to use since it is being installed to a secondary drive. The errors seen where from the 2.8 distro. But I'll plan on increasing the root for this.

Version 3.0 still won't work with my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX I also need the list of modules that are loaded when the soundcard works on Ubuntu, just in case... I hope we will find why your device doesn't work :) Don't worry, no operating system can detect 100% of the hardware. At least there is less proprietary drivers to install on Linux than Windows, so life is already nice ? Edit : After some search, I found this : http://www.eng.uwaterloo.ca/~dtay/linuxLaptop.shtml It seems that the Audigy soundcard is designed for MS Windows. Google finds a lot of discussions about this card not working on Suse, Ubuntu, Mandriva, ... : good new : you're not alone ! JP |
Well Something weird happened when I upgraded from 2.8 to 3. So I decided to download the 3.0. The new installer is nice. I do like how setup just kicks off. Install went really smooth for me. I like the way xfce looks and the fact that I got even more backgrounds to choose from.
Frank golden I have not seen your question asked here. Also have you ever stopped to think that it may be how you asked the question that turned people away. Remeber these forums are filled with volunteers. No one is paid here. |

frankgolden[~]$ su Anyway regards the aeticle you mentioned this sound card has worked flawlessly in Ubuntu since the Breezy days. It should work in Zenwalk. What files do you want from my Ubuntu install exactly. I don't think the results for the second command are what you want. I don't know what the last part of the command wants for info. |

1) The minimum recommended size for a swap partition especially if it is to shared with another distro? 2) Can the swap partition be accessed for storing files or running programs or is it strictly reserved for virtual memory? Thanks for the reply by the way. On another forum many will ask questions like the second one seen here. Now that 3.0 is here will it update 2.8 or will it need a separate installation? is another type of common question that will be asked. Many lately have been asking if Linux supports gaming including Zenwalk as of late. How to set up your internet connection will be another to add to an evergrowing list for wireless as well as hard wired dsl. :study: |
