yoper install fail on dual boot win-linux system coz `linux partition not found`

I have a 1.6 GHz Pc with 3 partitions on my 30 GB HDD.

Partition one is 16 GB with WinXP. Partition D: is 5GB with Windows 98. Partition E: is again WinXP with 4GB space.

I wanted to install Yoper linux on my D: drive.

So I erased all data on my D: Drive and rebooted my Pc using a Win98 boot disk and erased the Partition entirely.

I rebooted my Pc with Yoper CD. I did as it asked me. When Qtpart started I set the `free` drive D: with: firstly 256MB swap file and about 4000MB for the linux partition. Note that it shows that my WinXP in C Partition as the `active` partition. (what does that mean anyway?)

I `committed` the session and continued. I clicked yes on using the swap file and linux partition. Unfortunately I get an error message saying `Linux Partition not found`

What is the problem above? What should I do to continue installation?

Ps: also is it possible to install Linux on my XP partition (in C drive) without affecting my Windows partitions in D and E?

You will also need to create a /home partition.

Hi Ed,

What do you mean by creating a /home partition - look I`m a COMPLETE newbie in Linux - besides it`s a 1000 times more complex than Windows - I can`t find words to describe this!

Another thing I tried to boot into my second XP II partition and it says a specific abc\xyz\... system file is missing! Which means my second XP Partition - as well as my Win98 partition - is not working.

I`ve just reformatted D: to fat32 and recopied my Windows folder from Windows 98 partition back into it.

I`ll see if it works.


Okay so how about installing Linux (Yoper)?

The only Linux I installed previously - on another pc configuration - was Fedora Core 2.

Please let me know how this `home` partition works.

coolview, when you get to the partition portion, you create a /root and a /swap create another linux partition, when you close qparted, it will find that 3rd one and name it /home for you (I think, been a while since i installed yoper.

Cool View, I have some interesting experiences I want to share with you and my recent journey with Yoper, When I was first installing YOPER I got the same thing that you was getting, No linux partition found. Well I figured out how to get around that. Since you are a newbie, There is something on the hdd called the MBR which is master boot record..which stores things like the partition table etc etc. So When Yoper installs...it Installs the boot loader right on the MBR. Well When I installed it...I may have had a preexising problem with my MBR, because YOPER NEVER got installed on my system. I say this first because it might be something related to the linux partition not found error that you are getting. Well, when you go into QT designer or CFdisk or whatever you are using to FDisk with, it will come up after wards and ask you to select a swap partition, then it will ask you to select a /home partiton. Well the latter is going to be the partition that root will be on or '/'. So in my case it was /dev/hda4. So what I did was I selected /dev/hda4 (since the partition type was 'Linux') and then I got the same error that you did. I was stunned and amazed at this and frustrated too. Here (from what it seems) I had to take advantage of a bug in the Installer. Here what I did was, You have to NOT select a home partition....and it will tell you that you didn't...then when it goes back to ask you to select a partition....go ahead and select it....after that....it should give you a dialog to select a File System....after that you should be good to go...I was very mad when I saw this...and thought that the installer would be a little better. I also noticed that on some of the dialogs...you can not select anything...and it will either go ahead...forward....or it will just crap out. So be careful. Be not like me and have to wipe our your mbr with dd /dev/zero command...and repartition everything. Yoper really hosed me this time around...I prolly won't install it until a couple more major releases. Hope this helps....

What boot manager did you pick? Lilo is not much use with a dual boot XP set up. Try Grub - its available in Yoper ( the default is Lilo ). Choose Grub, then towards the end of the install it will set up Grub for you and then simply choose to write the partition info to the MBR on the XP partition.
I have experimented with several methods of dual booting XP ( for other people ) and Grub is 100% successful. It can be done with Lilo, but its very unpredicatable :-(
