Ntfs
I need to access file on my window XP machines (primarly an XP Pro machine)
I dont need to be able to write to it just to read the files. When I use the network browser and try to connect to the drives it states that error "cant resolve address" How can I get it accessing the files? And how can I setup Vector to share files with my XP machines? (if it can be done) Thanks AMDbuilder :newbie: (using Vector linux 4.3) |
simplest way is to use smb4k which comes with KDE.

Im using vector linux 4.3
If you visit http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis...ion_table.html you should find that My version dosnet appear to have KDE... Sounded very simple tho. Can it be DLed and installed for VL 4.3? Thanks for the idea. AMDbuilder :newbie: |
You could try searching for it , you may be lucky, but it looks like KDE is an optional extra so you would need to install that first .
here's a link to an article that might help http://distrocenter.linux.com/print..../12/03/1343201 if this doesn't work then search google using "smb4k vectorlinux" (withou the quotes) and you should get to it that way |
Thanks
I might just try out another distro and all. This time im going to look for openoffice and firefox preinstalled.. Then a good http server as apachee has driven me nuts... (Cant turn it on... and no nice gui for me to use... :() Any recommendations? (Gota work on this) AMD k6-2 450 mhz 128mb ram 3 gb HD (Using ~400 mb as swap...too much?) Virge Graphics card Linksys NIC 52x CD (and soon to have CDRW) Thanks AMDbuilder (I hope to find better used rig down the road but till then this must work.) |
Try some of the live distros like Knoppix , simplyMepis etc that way you can see if the distribution likes your hardware and if you like the distribution you can always do an install from the live cd. Both Knoppix and simplyMepis also support KliK( http://klik.atekon.de/ ) , which I have yet to use but looks interesting, which allows you to download a package and have it run straight out of the package.
As to your swap question 400MB should be plenty, however a bigger drive would be better, 3GB is about minimum size these days for OS and usefull software alone let alone the user space requirements. Personally I use 3GB for standalone systems like firewall/routers and use at least 120GB for a workstation - the drive starts out empty but give it a year or two and you'll be getting an even bigger disk |
Yea once I figure out all the linux stuff and clean off my old 20 gig its going in as a storage drive...
That and I want to figure out the linux filesystem as well... Its rather confusing.. but im still a noobie. Thanks AMDbuilder |
There is a reason LinNeighborhood is not working...there is a bug and a patch on their website for the version installed with VL4.3...But to get it going you'll have to apply a patch and recompile...
An easier soloution might be just typing at the command line to get it going.... something like: smbmount /Hostname(of Windows Computer)/Shared directory /mnt/windows \ -o username:windowslogin, password=winpassword You may have to play around with this a bit but this is generally what you'll have to do... From there you'll be able to access your windows shared directories... I guess you could add a line in /etc/fstab and have it automatically mount your windows shared directory...I havent done this yet - but I'm sure with some googleing and experimenting you'll get it to work... Let us know how it goes... nedson |
My overall playing with linux has come to an end for a bit. Durring this time im going to look for a much faster rig with more space and try over with a different distro like SOT linux.
The fun of school work... Thanks for the help when I get more time to play with it all I will post back with some results! (might be sometime before then :( ) AMDbuilder |
