URGENT: No internet connection in Ubuntu 9.10

I have just installed the latest version of Ubuntu which is the Karmic Koala (9.10). However, when i restarted my laptop, there was no internet connection. I'm using a DSL connected in a router. Please help! i badly need the internet!

Also, there's no minimize/maximize buttons in my windows. I cant even close a window, please help.Thank you.

the min/max buttons is probably a problem with compiz and the emerald window manager. If you have the compiz-fusion icon installed click it. If not, from the command line

emerald --replace
The internet is another issue. More details maybe. Wired/wireless? error given if any etc...

Internet issue

I'm really a newbie in ubuntu, so how can i make the buttons appear? (more detailed procedure please)

For the internet connection, it's a PLDT DSL wired then connected to a router so it became wireless.argh..sorry, really have no ideas on this area.

I just want to know the detailed procedure on how to connect on the internet.

NOT Urgent.....we are volunteers and we respond when we get around to it. Some will not even look at threads with this in the title.

Have you tried the Ubuntu network setup utility (in the menus somewhere)? Actually, didn't the installer ask some questions about your connection?

Wired, Wireless, or both? For example, if you have a wireless router, then first get it working with a wired connection.

Does the wireless router also have regular wired (ethernet) outputs?

What is the wireless card in the computer?

thanks so much pixellany for your time but you might get mad or get irritated because i'm not a "techy" person.. I dont even know what's the wireless card but i have the ethernet something..so i really cant provide very specific data. i'm really a newbie, but this forum really helps me =)

what kind of laptop is it? look on the back for the make and model #. I believe I can find what kind of wireless card you have w/ that info

newbieinubuntu 12-03-2009 08:29 AM

Hi bret,thanks for helping. It's a MSI S262 series(YA-TOO pink)..

bret381 12-03-2009 08:32 AM

ok, looks like you have an Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g)

from the command line type in iwconfig and post the results
also, try ifconfig and post those results

I asked you several questions.....bret is helping you with the card.

The wireless router: Does it also have regular wired outputs? The typical router will have one input, and several output jacks. These are called "RJ-45" and look like a standard phone jack (RJ-11), but are larger. If in doubt, tell us the make and model of the router.

Assuming that the router has the wired outputs, the first thing to try is to get the connection working that way. If you don't have one, you will need to get a standard ethernet cable (RJ-45 plug on each end, and long enough to go from router to computer.)

Good news!! The Intel Wireless is VERY well supported in Linux.

As mentioned in my other posts, I recommended getting it working with regular wired (Ethernet) first.

bret381 12-03-2009 08:52 AM

to get you min/max buttons back, just turn off compiz for now... in command line metacity --replace

Are you seeing any networks at all in your network manager to connect to?
