"Freeview" Digital TV cards (DVB) on SUSE
 

I've had a Hauppage Win TV card for as long as I can remember and it's fine. However since the UK is phasing out analog TV (the old fashioned kind) and Freeview reception has improved drastically I'm looking for a decent Freeview type TV card to replace the Hauppage card.

(For Non UK people "Freeview" is the new Terrestial Digital TV service --no satellite dish or cable box needed).

It has a whole slew of more (Free unscrambled) channels than the old Analog stuff that's been around since around 1930). Reception can also be in HD (High Definition) format (although none currently --you still need a satellite subscription for that).

Anybody got a "Freeview" type card working on SUSE yet.

If so what program are you using (KDETV ?) and what's the card type you purchased.

I don't mind if it is a USB one either -- in fact this would be fine as I could also use it on a laptop.

Hi there.

I've been using a Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T Freeview card for some time with OpenSuse 10.0 to 10.2.

The software I use is Kaffeine. It must be the Packman version I think, plus other necessary software from Packman too (eg. Xine I expect).

Setting up the channels is easy in Kaffeine as long as you know the name of your local TV transmitter (it's selectable under the "configure DVB" option in the DVB menu).

When you look at "configure tv card" in Yast, you will probably see 2 lines of information like this:

0-TV CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder
Not Configured Nova-T DVB-T Model 909.

I've found that if you try and configure the second line object, nothing works so I leave it as it is.

I'm going to buy that one -- looks fine for my purpose. Kaffeine / Mplayer should wbe OK as I've already got both these working for DVD playing (Pacman Repos and libdvdcss).

If you havnt bought it yet, the hauppage Nova t-500 is perfect. i am currently watching freeveiw on it in kaffeine, and recording another channel.
The t-500 has two seperate digital tuners on it, making it perfect for watching and recording. £55 from ebuyer, and 60 from the highstreet

Installed and working. Kaffeine is fine.
Did have a bit of trouble finding the local TV transmitter but Google and BBC web site came to the rescue.

I actually got it for £42 from the net.
