Installable Solaris on X86 acrchitecture
 
Dear All

I need to know is it possible to install SOLARIS on a x86 architecture PC. I am a very illiterate regards to SOLARIS. I heard SOLARIS can be installed on MAINFRAME computer.

Yes it is possible to install Solaris on a x86 PC. Solaris x86 is quite similar to a modern Linux, as SuSE, RedHat, etc. There is a project to port Solaris to IBM Mainframe zSeries, but it is not finished yet. Solaris has been traditionally used on minicomputers/workstations with the SPARC cpu. But now it works on Intel/AMD x86 very good. There are several Solaris distros, just as Linux. You have ordinary Solaris 10 and you also have Open Solaris (which is the next generation Solaris in Beta stage right now - although it is very stable and many people use it), you also have Belenix, Schillix, etc. I think Belenix is Ubuntu but with Solaris kernel, no Linux kernel. Or is it Schillix? Cant remember.

All of the Solaris distros are free to use and download.

None of the above ;)
Nexenta is the one based on Ubuntu userland.
