I recomend to you to downlaod the dependecies first and to install then try again,if you try with urpmi, dependencies may fail, but when you download and install then you will see what it needs to install, how you will do that simple with kpackage first test,if you see result:0 install,if comes error it will tell you what it needs and what fails.

For the 2.4.23.0-rc5 kernel try this:
urpmi kernel-2.4.23.0.rc5.2mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm
It will tell you that the package is missing a key and ask if you still want to install, go ahead and install as most packages in cooker are like this.

ok, for the 2.6 kernel I tried it had dependencies, the 2.2.23 didn't. It just has some kind of weird error. That is the one I am really trying to get working.

If it said it was already installed then look in /boot and see if the kernel is there.

If it is then check /etc/lilo.conf to see if there is an entry in it for the new kernel, if not then make and entry, save lilo.conf and run lilo.

WooHoo!!! 2.6 is Zippppppy!

I got the 2.6.0.1 kernel installed and running on my 9.2 test box, and I do have to say, everything seems a whole lot faster. Bootup, loading, opening apps; overall performance feels like my box has undergone a major tune-up and filled with 104 octane gas!

Of course, had to overcome the dependencies problem but for those who want to give 2.6 a shot via rpms (I know, I know...alll you hardcore *nix users, don't flame me for simplicity and ease...besides, I'm too lazy to compile ), make sure you install the following packages (also order of installation is important):

bootloader-utils-1.6-4mdk.i586.rpm
modutils-2.4.25-2mdk.i586.rpm
mkinitrd-3.4.43-10.i586.rpm
udev-009-1mdk.i586.rpm
libsysfs0-0.3.0-4mdk.i586.rpm
sysfsutils-0.3.0-4mdk.i586.rpm
module-init-tools-0.9.15-0.pre4.1mdk.i586.rpm
procps-3.1.14-1mdk.i586.rpm
kernel-2.6.0.1mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

Also, I had edit lilo.conf, for after running lilo. I guess the 2.6 kernel rpm added another 2.4.22 entry and I just deleted the duplicate entry. The 2.6 entry also had to edited; for the initrd=, read-only, append= and vga= lines were jumbled and a "common"(can't remember exactly what it was now, but I'm pretty sure it was "common") entry had to be deleted.

Have fun !

I spoke too soon :(

Funny things have been happening now since I've installed 2.6. I lost ability to "su" (error says: The program 'su' is not found! Make sure your PATH is set correctly.) and can't open any terminals (konsole, aterm, xterm, etc. with cpu shooting at 100% when clicking icon). Hmmmf! It seems that one or some of the required package(s) that was dependent to 2.6 changed the paths???

Will keep you posted if any new discoveries/solutions are made.

To get your xterm back you need to select Unix pty support. And in filesystems select devpts. Also make sure you have this entry in /etc/fstab
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

I installed the kernel 2.6.0.1mdk with all dependencies and looked like everything goes fine,I rebooted and in verbose mode says modprobe wrong version, yeah,it is really booting fastly, but opening the kfm or home directory and programs was too slow or even didn't open when I clicked.I don't know why? here is the list what I installed
mkinitrd 3.4.43-10mdk
module-init-tools 0.9.15mdk
sysfsutils0-0.3.0-4mdk
libsysfsutils0-3.0-4mdk
udev-007-2mdk
kernel-2.6.0.1mdk
thats all was needed, what went wrong,or what else to install?
I uninstalled the kernel-2.6.0.1 because of modprobe errors about everything and programs opend too slowly or didn't open at all.

moonloader, try installing bootloader-utils, modutils and procps in addition to the other packages. When I initially installed (manually), I tried to install the 2.6 kernel first to see the packages required. And everything that I had listed above, were required for my system except procps. I, then, did some searching and found the dependencies here. I don't know what packages are on your box, so, try installing the three other packages before giving up on 2.6.

hmmm...I not completely sure, but maybe due to modprobe not loading required modules had to do something with it? My test box has only 128MB or memory and compared to the 2.4.22 kernel, it's more responsive when opening apps and running progs.

Give it another try and post back.

estatik

Oh, BTW, did you check your fstab? /bin/bash's advice above solved my issues.

result same many errors!would be sure nice to solve the problems but seem to be really difficult or what?by the way,udev-007-2mdk can't be installed with out kernel-2.6.0.1mdk or kernel-2.6.0.1mdk can't be installed without udev-007-2mdk how about that?oki, how I installed and tried then,I forced to install with kpackage and it installed without checking the dependencies I mean kernel and udev
