Distribution of the Year

And the best Distro is....

I know there will be many arguments here, but what about Knoppix? It isn't really a traditional distribution, but I think it has done more for public awareness of Linux, and for increasing the awareness/use of Debian than any of the traditional distributions. It is also current #3 on the distrowatch.com hit rankings.

Personal favourite is Mandrake 9.1 - a nice middle ground..
SUSE 9 is clearly the most polished - a good example.
Vector 3.2/4 is just plain "fast".
Slack 9.1 with KDE - what a combination....... nice!

Slackware! w00t! and root linux is pretty cool.

Had to vote for Debian. I just installed Fedora so its to early to tell for me if it would have been a contender. I can't even get Arch to install with ethernet support yet so Debian is my pick.

1. There's no Gentoo?

Slackware! 9.1 is the best version so far and it keeps getting better.

I run Mandrake 9.1 on a custom built box at home and Fedora on my Dell C640. I gave the nod to Fedora because everything worked on the Dell C640 right from the start. Power management works flawlessly, 3D graphics work great, and no garbled screen when the machine is brought out of sleep. Also, yum works great. If yum works on an upgrade from Core 1 to Core 2, as I've read it should, I'll never look at another distro again.

Slackware is in the lead with a 2:1 margin over the second place distro (Mandrake) at this time with 18 votes for slack and 9 for mandrake.

I like Mandrake. I recommend it as a good workstation distro for n00bs at their homes. But alas, I build servers and nowadays have returned to my SLS roots and typically build only Slackware or Open/Free/NetBSD boxes.

hm..... Am I the only person on this planet left that still spells LiGNUx, LiGNUx?

I see Gentoo made it into the polls too, but it's just not quite ready for primetime in the datacenter yet IMNSHO

Libranet for me. Easy updates, Easy install, I'm just a user couldnt edit a text file without learning how and I havent had to learn.

Well; I have used only one Linux distro (well; not counting Knoppix); wich is RedHat Linux v.9.

It is my first Linux to use ever. And I'm very impressed with it.

Anyone have any suggestions on wich other Linux distros I should try? (and they need to be as easy to install as RedHat 9)
