Connected SSD not showing up on fdisk -l

Nood here, ive been trying to create a self hosted file saver but i keep running into one error or another when dealing with external storage on a Raspberry Pi 4 (2gb). My current issue is an inability to see the external ssd when i run the command sudo fdisk -l

mount -a

returns:

mount: /mnt/sdd: must be superuser to use mount.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

dmesg

returns:

Hello lostdukezw & welcome to LQ. Necessary reading is How_To_Ask_a_Question

I'll bet you haven't read the dmesg output although you gave it to us to read. Anyhow, 'sudo mount -a' mounts all disks listed in /etc/fstab. sdd will be your 4th usb disk, the first three being sda, sdb, & sdc. And you usually mount the partitions, not the entire disk. There are some exceptions, but it'd the usual case. The command 'sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdd' tells you what partitions are on the disk. There's only 4 usb ports on a RazPi 4, and you need keyboard and mouse, so you're still learning or you have interesting things going on.

A better way to mount is to connect a disk, then run 'sudo dmesg |tail'. That Gives you a line like
Code:
sdb: sdb1 sdb2 sdb3 sdb4
and you mount one of the partitions sdb1-4 on a directory, e.g. 'sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt'

My first thought is that you are not supplying the drive with enough power and that you need to add a powered hub.

It'd really do us all a lot more good if the OP would try to provide the LQ community with as many log files as possible. Said log files can in fact be found in the /var/log file hierarchy

This
Code:
[ 2433.162836] critical medium error, dev sda, sector 0 op 0x0READ) flags 0x0 phys_seg 1 prio class 2
[ 2433.162844] Buffer I/O error on dev sda, logical block 0, async page read
is not a good sign and indicates a hardware issue. At best - insufficient power, at worst - a dud disk. Check SMART.
