Can't log in with GDM (or GUI) but can log in via CLI with no password after updates.

I installed sabayon 5.1 in late august. My last successful update was about a week ago, and today I installed some updates and I can no longer log in. If I drop to a console I am able to log in as my user or as root without using any password, but if I use GDM I get a popup saying "Authentication Error" (I'm suspecting PAM). My current version is sabayon 5.3 x86 Gnome and my kernel is 2.6.34 (only kernel in eselect kernel list). Is there some way I can fix my login?

Thank-you in advance for any assistance offered.

UPDATE:
Today I inserted my Sabayon 5.3 boot cd and booted to a working desktop. From there, I copied everything from /etc/pam.d on the liveCD and replaced the corresponding files in /etc/pam.d on my installed hard drive (backing up as necessary). It seems to work fine now so I guess it must have just been a bad config file.
