startx

Log in at the command line prompt and enter "startx". Post the response the computer gives you.

X refers to Xwindows, which presents you with a graphical presentation using your video card. It is necessary to have it working in order to interact with a graphical user interface.

You can probably find lots of information by using the search option on this forum, as well as using Google with relevant search words ("Red Hat 8" Xwindows X server graphical login)

If you can't figure things out, I would suggest using a live-evaluation CD, which runs directly from your CD-ROM drive without altering your hard drive. MEPIS and knoppix are two very good examples. They autodetect hardware and configure things quite nicely. If you make sure that your BIOS is set to boot from CD, they should get you to a graphical desktop with little trouble. If you like what you see, you can install them to hard drive. Dual-booting with Windows is not a problem.

change permission before burning CD?

I have not had the CD permissions problem. Could you get the file on your computer in some other way, log in as root, and then change the permissions, burning later if you want to? Perhaps the CD you have was intentionally set with copy protection.
