Yesterday I made my first woof-CE build.
It came out as xenial-7.0.6 with kernel 4.9.13-xenial no PAE x86.
If you would be so kind as to test and let me know how I did.

Out of curiosity, did you leave out flash player entirely? A few distributions I've noticed lately include at least the Pepperflash version, despite the fact that redistribution, to my knowledge, is prohibited.

Yes I did for security reasons.
It is easy enough to install if you need it.
I have found that I do not need it or Java for normal everyday operation.

Cool! It works (tho a bit slow in my poorOLD Atom N270 cpu VBox on XP 2G ram host).

Several brief messages -flashed- by, -before- the boot select screen, 1st attachment here.

When I gave it USB 1.1 (OHCI), I got the panic in 3rd attachment (NuTyX,mll ok with 1.1)
@ardvark71, do you get same in your WinVista VBox (when you change this to USB1.1)?

Why does it have 1 'extra' (not in shadow) /etc/passwd entry for man:x:65534:65534::/tmp ??
I did (Ctrl-Alt-F2) `modprobe e1000` to get eth0 to appear; `dhcpcd` worked.
(I haven't tried to Alt-F4 GUI config network tho)

A *N00b* question: how ('cookbook') would I `apt install strace`? :redface:

Actually, DOUBLEthanks! This is about the FIRST time I've tried Linux GUI!
(tho my poorOLD netbook takes about a minute to bring up Network info window:()

p.s. an odd/semi-OT ?: is there a way to have an 'UNcompressed' kernel,
so it/mll/etc doesn't have to spend a minute "Decompressing Linux"?

I don't use a VM for any of my OS installs so I couldn't tell you.

With Puppy you can run live and just make a save file to load flash and java if wanted.
There is no limits to save files in Puppy.

Save files will show up in next live bootup if wanting to use them.
To not load save files. Use the puppy pfix=ram boot cheat code.

@#5: oh, sorry, I thought you had tried it (-I- 'should' invest $7 in a USB stick &learn!)
I also wonder if it would run faster on 64bit VBox... Are you sure I can't get you to click;)
(actually, maybe there's reasons I'm not aware of / understand, for not choosing to try VBox)

No, my system has too little memory to support using a VM. :)

@#9: Ah, yes, if a WinPC has <1GB ram, VBox wouldn't be appropriate.
I give my VBoxes 256M-512M on my 32bit 2G XP netbook; 2-4 Linux VMs CLI run ok.
Since this Puppy seems ok with 256M, I'll try it as a VBox on a 64bit 7" Win8.1 1G tablet; maybe this 4.9.13 kernel will work better with the touchscreen than an older Puppy I tried last year.

Hi...

I'm writing you now from a copy of your build running in memory. The system being used is a Dell Inspiron 531S with an AMD Athlon X2 processor, 2 GB's of memory and an onboard Nvidia GeForce 6150SE graphics chip. :)

After burning the copy to a DVD, it booted quickly without a hitch. Logging into my wireless network was painless using Frisbee. I didn't try the other network managers. Has a definite Mac OS look. I've been playing around with it for a few minutes now and have had only one problem. I tried installing a couple programs using the Puppy Package Manger and with each program or package downloaded, I get an error message stating that: "Debian executables show as shared libraries in ROX. For PPM to fix that during installation you should install elfutils or have devx loaded." I've used Puppy before so I'm pretty sure I can resolve this and get it working correctly. However, someone new to Linux or Puppy may not understand what this means and have no idea what to do. Perhaps you could remedy by getting one or both programs mentioned in the error installed and running in a future release. ;)

I also noticed that the OS was using almost 1 GB of memory with no other programs running except for Palemoon and "top" in the terminal. You might want to find a way to trim that down as much as possible for the really old systems. Of minor note: Palemoon displayed the texts of the posts in this thread in kind of a strange way. There was a wide line, about an inch and a half, going down the middle of the page that the words were darker in color than the the rest of the page. It might have been a browser or video driver issue, I didn't dig into it to find out why.

Even enjoyed one of my old Puppy standby's: A game of xsoldier. :D

I have a few suggestions, as well....

1. Change the default colors in the terminal, especially the yellow for the commands. It's very hard to see. I have yet to figure out how to change that.

2. Perhaps remove the skull and crossbones as the icon for Xkill and replace it with something else, if possible. Something a little more family friendly. ;)

3. Add a screenshot program, such as "gnome-screesnshot" or something similar, if you haven't already.

4. Add "Speedcrunch" calculator in your list of pre-installed business programs.

5. Create an easy way to install the proprietary Nvidia driver.

I also am writing this using my own creation. I am not a programmer (YET). I finally fingered out how to get the woof-CE thing from Github to work. Was quite the task considering the woof-CE instructions are incomplete.
I have not had any of your difficulties.
As for the package manager try to update it and see if that helps.

I can try that but it sounds like it was requesting software that had nothing to do with PPM but so that Debian based software would work more smoothly in Puppy.
