Puppy not recognizing hd
I've got a beautiful older IBM A20P laptop with extremely limited use over the years and since the hardware specs are limited I decided Puppy would be a nice os for it.
I can boot the live cd of 5.2 and use it nicely but for some reason puppy does not recognize that a hd is installed at all. There is no mount icon at all and running gparted sees nothing as well. I've run the installer and it sees nothing too. I've combed the entire OS looking for tools to help find the hd but have been unsuccessful. Is my hardware too old for puppy? It runs in ram so well and this old laptop desperately needs puppy but unless I can't install it there is no use... Anyone have a clue how to find the hd? |
Go to your BIOS and look if your harddisk is recognized there. If not I would assume that it is faulty.

This laptop is pretty old and the OS you are trying to use is fresh off the press.
You might have more success with an older Puppy. A whole list of them is here http://puppyisos.org/isos/ A very good recommendation is version 214RC5 http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=42553 I prefer RC5 half way down the page, but Top6 should be okay, too. Or try Wary 5.0 http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02057 |
Hmmmm, The harddrive is good because I installed Antix on it but I think puppy still runs much better as a live cd than an installed antix.
I assumed that this version of puppy would see my hd in this old hardware but I'll give an older version a try and see what happens. Too bad actually... |
Where can I get this one? All the links are moved or broken...just my luck. In want to try the newest one for older hardware....I think the 5.0 wary released 12-28-10 should do but I can't seem to locate it.

Look at the last post in thread. It mentions how some users have problems with newer gparted in Puppy and to roll back to a earlier version.

I tried to edit my post but couldn't figure out how to delete it completely.....I found the links fine. Sorry about that. I'm burning 5.0 now and I'll give it a whirl...Thanks folks! |
Well, same in 5.0.....no hd. I guess I'll go back to the vintage stuff....2.14rc5 ...Is that still supported?
|
|
The solution I used was to halt the initial boot up from the CD and then run puppy acpi=force at the boot prompt. I then had to install and permanently setup the boot to do that.

I like the VW on the wallpaper...I drive a bus so this is a natural. I am curious why FF 3.5 is in it though....seems to me iceape or xxxterm would fit better? Oh well.....I'll work with it a day or two and see what happens. Thanks for the very cool link with all the apps and fixes too....very nice. |
FF in 214X
Glad you got it working.
FF 3.5 can be replaced by a newer version. Either by using the update feature of the browser or - much better - by installing it to /mnt/home, if you have a frugal install. Just get the tar.gz from the mozilla site http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html unpack it to /mnt/home and change the path in the desktop icon to read /mnt/home/firefox/firefox. Don't forget to delete the old FF 3.5. folder under /usr/lib. |
O.K......I give. How do you connect to a wireless network with this version of puppy?(214) I don't get it...The network is seen and so are my neighbors, but good lord I can't figure out how to connect to them. I use wpa2 encryption...Is this too new for the tools in this version of puppy? All I see are wep tools and asking for wep keys....aghhh!
There are so many strange network tools included that its confusing what each does and how to properly use them. Anybody have a tutorial or something? |
Back again,
looks like you are way behind my time zone (GMT+1) and thus we are communicating with one day delay. Anyway, I don't have wireless and all the info here is untested by me. And also this http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html is a Puppy search engine and finds most relevant posts. And finally.... wish you much success |
