Puppy 431 unable to write NTFS on HP nx6110
 

Hallo,
I'm running puppy 431 on live cd on an hp laptop with 256 mb ram, 1.4 mhz celeron and 40 gb ntfs hard disk.
since puppy has saved the pup_412.sfs file I'm unable to write, save or delete pup_save.2fs or any other file on the hard drive.

the bios has a function to check the sanity of the disk and it passes without errors.
Since I used puppy, windows xp doesn't boot anymore.
I'd like to check the file system using fsck /dev/sda1 -a
,but it doesn't work.
If I remove puppy's cd and try to bot xp, the laptop reboots it self spontaneously so I'm unable to run chkdsk.
has anybody experienced this before?
please advise.

at the puppy cd boot prompt "puppy pfix=ram" without the quotation marks should do the trick.

I don’t use XP so no joy there. During the creation of a save file you are cautioned to defrag Windows *before* you create the save file, did you?

Your Puppy file numbers are wrong. See below:
4.3.1 = pup-431.sfs
4.2.1 = pup_421.sfs

Did you try to upgrade or did you put the wrong version Puppy disc in and then (accidentally?) do a save file install? I.E. You were currently using 4.3.1 live disc then you put in 4.2.1 live disc and at shut down save file was overwritten.

Try the following:
When Puppy first boots a message appears momentarily asking if you want to use alternate boot parameters. When this message appears immediately press F2 key, then type “puppy pfix=ram” then press enter.

In this mode Puppy runs solely from RAM (128MB minimum required). You will now be prompted to setup your hardware just as you did when first booting Puppy.

Follow the prompts to complete setup. Puppy will now boot normally. You are now free to do any file management tasks you please.

Follow these instructions to manage your Windows files.

When you shut down you will be asked if you want to create a save file. If you do then any save file you may currently have will be overwritten.

indeed the puppy file is pup-431.sfs, I wrote pup_421.sfs by mistake ( I copy/pasted from another laptop running puppy 4.2.1).
I did not defrag the disk before saving puppy, I think this is the problem, the laptop belongs to my sister in law and she never defragged in 3 years....
I've learned the lesson for next time.
Is there any command to defrag from puppy?

Use Windows boot disk (floppy or CD) (made with functional Windows computer or supplied with original Windows install disc). If you succeed with Windows boot disc use “Safe Mode” and run ScanDisc then Defrag.

If you can’t find or make boot disc look here BootDisks.

Windows may run slowly so be patient. If Defrag fails or hangs reboot and start again. Defrag may take several hours to complete.

Fix Puppy after you fix Windows.
