can I track the progress of a download and installation in Puppy?
 

In the menu for Slacko Puppy 6.3.0 (and I believe some of the other varieties of Puppy) there is an option for installing LibreOffice. If one chooses that option, is there a way to see the progress of the download, or even if it has started at all?

I am working with a rather slow connection speed, and would like to be sure I am tying up my connection profitably.

This question is not so much solved, as that I realized I was on the wrong track altogether--although the computer claimed it was connected to the internet, it was not, and so no download could start.
I was slower to realize this than I should have been, in part because my connections can be so erratic.

Before anything else, let me just say 'Welcome to the kennels'. Puppy's a wee bit 'odd', even by Linux standards, but once you've got your head round the differences, you'll love it.

With regard to Grub4DOS:-

You can go ahead and use this with complete confidence. Some people will warn you that it's unsupported, and has been for some time. Not in this case. Puppy's version is well up-to-date, and patched; in fact, a new version has just been released. And Grub4DOS (Puppy's version, at any rate} has been specially 'tweaked' to work with Puppy's unusual layout.

GRUB2 will only see a 'full' install of Puppy.....and if you're running one of those, you really are missing out on most of Pup's best features. The 'frugal' install is the way to go (and, no, it's not a 'poor-man's' version of Puppy; it merely refers to the way that Puppy is frugal with drive space. It's very small!) And Grub4DOS will find, and boot, anything you might have on your system. I've yet to find anything it won't boot.

With regard to LibreOffice:-

You can use the built-in installer if you want; it downloads the package from L.O's web-site, turns it into a Puppy-specific SFS package, then loads it for you. However, the easiest way is probably to simply grab it from the Puppy Forum website, ready-to-go. Many members post the packages their Pups have built, using the installer; cuts out the 'middle-man', as it were.

As for PaleMoon; recent Pups use it, because it's a great, lightweight alternative for Mozilla fans.....especially those who aren't too keen on Firefox's 'bloat. Helps to make sure you're on the newest version, of course.

We've got browsers for Puppy coming out of our ears. The best thing you could do in this respect, is to have a look through the 'Browsers & Internet' section of the Puppy Forum.....and see what takes your fancy. I say this in all honesty, because those packages have all been built/adapted/modified to specifically work with Puppy's unique method of operation.

No disrespect to the LQ membership at all, but many here take a rather dim view of Pup, and regard it as little better than a 'toy'. I'm merely directing you to where you'll get the best, tailor-made advice for Puppy, that's all.....from people who use it all day, every day as their regular 'daily driver'.
