xdg-open: no method available for opening

First. I am not a programmer. But I feel safe enough to edit a file (after backing it up of course.)

I am using Arch with Enlightenment (E17.) I installed fwbuilder. Now when I click on the tutorial button it would not start my browser at all. The terminal gave this error;

Code:

/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: firefox: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: mozilla: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: epiphany: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: konqueror: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: chromium-browser: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: google-chrome: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: links2: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: links: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: lynx: command not found
/usr/bin/xdg-open: line 478: w3m: command not found
xdg-open: no method available for opening 'http://www.fwbuilder.org/4.0/quick_start_guide_2.html'

So I went in as root to /usr/bin/xdg-open. I changed;

This:
Code:

# if BROWSER variable is not set, check some well known browsers instead
if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"" ]; then
    BROWSER=links2:links:lynx:w3m
    if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
        BROWSER=firefox:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium-browser:google-chro$
    fi
fi

To this:
Code:

# if BROWSER variable is not set, check some well known browsers instead
if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"chromium" ]; then
    BROWSER=links2:links:lynx:w3m
    if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
        BROWSER=firefox:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium-browser:google-chro$
    fi
fi

adding chromium.

Now the only error I get is this:

Code:

xdg-open: no method available for opening 'http://www.fwbuilder.org/4.0/quick_start_guide_2.html'
I am lost on what to do now.

Here is my whole /usr/bin/xdg-open file;
Code:

#!/bin/sh

Anyone have any ideas on what I need to do?

a4z 07-01-2011 02:05 PM

you have

# if BROWSER variable is not set, check some well known browsers instead
Code:

if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"chromium" ]; then
Code:

    BROWSER=links2:links:lynx:w3m
    if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
        BROWSER=firefox:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium-browser:google-chrome:$BROWSER
    fi
fi

but it looks like your BROWSER varirable is not set to chromium so the following code is ignored

trial a
BROWSER=chromium
bevor the if statement

or leaf the compairison like in the original
if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"" ]; then

Amdx2_x64 07-01-2011 02:31 PM

Thank you. That was simple and made sense.

Original was:

Code:

# if BROWSER variable is not set, check some well known browsers instead
if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"chromium" ]; then
    BROWSER=links2:links:lynx:w3m
    if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
        BROWSER=firefox:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium-browser:google-chrome:$BROW$
    fi

New one is:
Code:

# if BROWSER variable is not set, check some well known browsers instead
if [ x"$BROWSER" = x"chromium" ]; then
    BROWSER=links2:links:lynx:w3m
    if [ -n "$DISPLAY" ]; then
        BROWSER=firefox:mozilla:epiphany:konqueror:chromium:google-chrome:$BROW$
    fi

As you directed I changed the "chromium-browser" to "chromium" It works perfectly with no errors now.

Thanks again.

See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=755553#c9
for a full description of the problem and solutions..

However I do NOT recommend modifing the script, because the script will be restored next time you re-install the system, or they finally actually update the script properly.

The easiest work around is simply open your ".bashrc" and add a line like

export BROWSER="gvfs-open"

Where the command you pick is either a "web browser" or other "open file" that handles most files and URLs.

You can make that variable a list, but xdg-open generates errors rather than silently ignore 'missing programs'. Like I said its brain dead.

Even its BROWSER environment variables sanitiser code can fail in specific situations causing a infinite loop.
