Sound doesn't work right

When i play a DVD or listen to an ogg file or anything in mandrake 9.1 I am only getting sound out of one speaker! It comes out of the right speaker. In something like xmms if i move the slider all the way to the left and turn the volume all the way up i can hear Very muted sound out of the left but not really audible. This is on my laptop. What should i do?

Can you test it with any other sound source? This looks like a hardware problem to me.

Okay this is really weird. Did some testing. Here is what i found if i open a dvd in xine and start playing it then it will only come out the right speaker. While it's playing i go in and open aumix and move the master volume up or down then the second speaker kicks in! Also the sound settings from the mixer program only start working when i open that up and change it. If i leave it at 100 it won't be loud untill i open the program again. Even though it will say that it's at 100 percent it won't really be untill i open that up. Weird. Is there some way to load the mixer at startup? Or should it be dong this already?

Okay even more weird. If i boot up and go into xmms and play a song it works fine, but if i'm playing a song and then start xine up it will all of the sudden stop go muted and only to the right speaker! Is using the wrong sound something? I donno what. I'm really new at this still. What are some other good dvd players? Maybe it's just xine that doesn't work right.

Try opening up aumix when playing a DVD, messing with the sound until you get it the way you want, and then saving the configuration and see if that helps you.

Just tried it and it doesn't work. It works for xmms but not for xine. It seems to me that xine "overwrites" any other sound setting when it starts up.
