shutdown problems
 

hi i have a problem where when i click to shutdown the computer i think it logs off and everything but it doesn't shut down the computer all the way. it stays on to where i can't just push the on/off button, i have to hold it down for a few seconds to turn it off. anyone have any ideas?

try typing :
modprobe apm
and then shutdown

if that was the problem, then we'll make it so that it runs all the time for when you want to
shutdown that it will completely power off ...

if it is not the problem then just say so and we'll see if acpi works ..

type mod probe apm where? i typed it in konsole and nothing happened..

you only think nothing happened ..
if you typed it and there was no errors, then that means you loaded it...
if it would of said "error loading module apm" or something similiar, then
you would have problems ...

well it says bash: mod: command not found

well you said nothing happend :confused:
if it said mod: command not found well then something did happen, and it means exactly what it says ...
i didn't tell you to type "mod"
i told you to try
modprobe apm

...

ok well what i typed was mod probe apm, not modprobe apm, and when i type modprobe apm it says modprobe: can't locate module apm

I also have the problem of my PC not shutting down correctly. After typing the command "modprobe apm" I get the message "command not found".
I would be grateful of any help regarding this problem, it took me a long time to download 3 ISO images on my dial up connection so I am determined to get Mandrake 9.2 to work perfectly ;)

I had the same problem, but Mandrake 9.2 has a very simple way to fix it.

Open the Mandrake Control Center.
Type in root password to obtain Super-User privileges.
Click 'Boot' on the left.
Click 'DrakBoot helps you set up how your system boots'
The upper section is called 'Lilo/Grub mode', click on 'Configure'.
Make sure there is a tick for 'Enable ACPI'
Click Ok, and Ok again to retain your multiboot order.
Then click Ok on the same window as you selected 'configure'.

That's it, after a restart Linux *should* be able to power down on it's own.

(of course if ACPI is already enabled then this is not of much help).

Arrowhead, I think 'modprobe' is a command only accessible by root, so if you tried it just logged in as yourself it wouldn't be found. Oh, and 3 iso images on a dial-up... hardcore.

You were right about me trying to use modprobe when not logged in as Root, can you tell I am a :newbie: I WILL get the hang of this eventually.

Oh yea, 3 ISO's on dial up was a bit much. I think I will buy version 10 because I am not doing that again.
