Mozilla painfully slow
 

Hi,
I am new to Linux. I have just installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 on 1GH PC with 512 MB ram. Everything went without hitch this time. I have Mozilla 1.7 (official release) installed. But my problem is that Mozilla is running painfully sloooow. It seems that it is running in slow motion just like running internet explorer in Windows 95 with 16MB ram. It takes 1-2 seconds when I switch from one tab to other tab but download speed seems to be fine. I have no problem running Mozilla in Windows on same computer even though I have a dial-up connection.

So thought it might be a problem with Mozilla and I decided to install Firefox 0.9 but had exactly same problem (actually Firefox is a bit slower than Mozila 1.7). I don't have swap file or partition and I have 316 MB ram free while running Mozilla with no other program running. Other programs than Mozilla run just fine. I have an ethernet card and an IEEE 1394 card installed which both are recognized by Mendrake Linux but I don't use them.

Is there anything that I can do to have Mozilla run faster as it runs under WIndows? Or is it normal for Mozilla to run slower under Linux? Can I try some other version of Mozilla or some other distro of Linux to make things speed up.

I believe for things to run smoother (because every program writes to the disk for one reason or another) u NEED a swap partition, at minimun the same amount as ur RAM or double.

Yep. That was it. I made a swap partition of 512MB and Mozilla and other apps are now running smoothly. Thanks.

Alright Mozilla was running fine for few days then I installed GCC and compiled & installed xine & xmms on my system. I did run 'Make clean' and 'make distclean' after installing each app. But now Mozilla is slow again. It takes about 1-2 seconds to switch from one tab to another.
Any suggestions.
