Mandrake 9.2, URPMI, and updating GAIM
Please forgive me as this is probably a naive question, but here's my story/question.
I'm running Mandrake 9.2 which has GAIM 0.68 as part of the install. I'd like to upgrade my gaim to 0.71. How do I do this? The most obvious way for me to do this would be "urpmi --update gaim" and I'm told "no package named gaim". I've used the easy urpmi web page to configure my media sources, and I BELIEVE they are all setup and working correctly. Any suggestions on how to do this? I've also downloaded gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1.i586.rpm from the gaim sourceforge page. I've tried installing that with "rpm -i gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1.i586.rpm" and got the response: error: Failed dependencies: libtcl8.3.so is needed by gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1 libtk8.3.so is needed by gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1 And I can't find those libraries anywhere. So, can anybody give me some suggestions on how to make this work? Thanks, David |
You can get the rpm here, I think you need to install the devel rpm first.

I had the same problem with the dependencies so I downloaded the tar.bz version and compiled gaim-0.71 and have it running fine. The rpm provided at the gaim web page is for Mdk 9.1, it is looking for older versions of Tk and tcl. The older versions conflict with other packages in Mdk 9.2. So, until someone makes a 9.2 compatible rpm for gaim-0.71 I think you are stuck. I have not learned how to make an rpm package yet. If I knew how I would do it.

Try this (I think you needed root level access):
You will need root level access su rpm -U gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1.i586.rpm (The -U means to Upgrade) |
Thanks for the info/breaking dependancies
Wow, thanks for the helpful responses.
I'm downloading the gaim 9.2 rpms now. If I can't get those to work, I'll compile. Now I've been warned against compiling as that will "break my dependancies". Now, what does that mean? Should I really worry about that? Is there any reason not to compile Gaim as opposed to using an rpm? Thanks, David |
Well, I just installed gaim on 9.1 with that same file that you're using, let me try to be some help
If it works like mine, you were on the right track the first time. Type in "urpmi gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1.i586.rpm". When I did that it requested disk 3 or mandrake 9.1, installed the library files for me, and I was on my way. Just in case the last suggestion didn't work |
