Mandrake 9.1 doesn't recognize VT82C686 Modem
Hi Everybody,
My Mandrake 9.1 Linux displays modem VT82C686 on my HP Laptop as Unkown and doesn't let me select another driver for it. There is sound card also on the same PCMCIA slot, which had problems but solved after I override autodetected driver and selected appropriate driver. Why doesn't it let me choose another driver for modem? Thanks in advance. abirla |
This may be a winmodem. Take a look at this site http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/?PHP...6a521b650c85f, especially teh "identifying your modem" part. If it's a conexant modem then you just need to install the driver that they have on the site. www.linmodems.org could be helpful also.

I tried to run /sbin/lspci command as suggested on various sites, but lspci command doesn't exist on my laptop? Can anyone tell me why lspci command didn't get installed with Mandrake 9.1? And how can I now install it?
|
you have to be root.
type su in the console window then the root password. Now try the command again. the scanmodem utility may be of more help. |

I have already run scanModem utility. But lspci not being installed is bothering me. Is it b'coz mandrake didn;t recoqnize any PCI components. Though "cat /proc/pci" results in output containing Communication device details. |
lspci should be located in /usr/bin/. It is provided by the pciutils package.
What did the scanmodem program come up with? |
Hi everybody,
Thanks for your help. I had to install pciutils package to be able to run lspci. Scanmodem programe suggested using slmdm, which didn't work. Finally I tried Linuxant's free driver, which worked. Does this mean that I can go ahead and buy their 56.6 Kbps modem driver? abirla |
The conexant modems work fine for me. Sure go ahead and buy/ebay one. Of course real hardware modems are the best way to go, though.
|
Maybe you could use 9.2 this now includes winmodems in the network wizard.

They most have just started charging for them. I got mine for nuttin. You can probably find it somewhere. ;)

Where did u find it.....Can u tell me?
|
On the Linuxant site. It seems that since they have released the new drivers (now Linux 2.6 compatible) that they started charging for them.
I've only got the old one for debian. Tough luck. |
