I went back and reversed the changes I initially made by adding the Winmodem drivers to the system so it was if they were never added when I was finished, and it (it being the external modem) was on one of the other com ports and worked great following the advice you gave. I don't know if there's anything else I should've done, but my external 56k works great now. ;)

Well. I'm still searching for a solution to my matter....

I found driver for Lucent winmodem for 2.6.3-7mdk kernel, but they're commercial packages..

If nobody can resolve my question (In many previous posts I've described it) with 2.6.3-7mdk kernel,
where can I find 2.6.3-4mdk kernel?
Can I downgrade from 2.6.3-7mdk to 2.6.3-4mdk with a patch or I have to download the full kernel?
Eventually, where can I find the patch?

marstell: That link you refererred should solve your problem -- assuming its an official rpm, all you should have to do is download it, install it, and try your modem again (e.g. with kppp etc). If that doesn't sort out, you might be able to get kernel-2.6.3-4mdk off mandrake's site... else Google search it. And no, you don't need the source -- the kernel itself would do -- install it, make sure lilo (or your bootloader) has an entry for it, and reboot using that kernel etc etc (install modem drivers as by instruction).

OK. Everything is fine up until I type “modprobe ltserial”. I get an error saying that the file does not exist. Well yes Mr. Mandrake it does because I’m looking at the file. I try everything I can think of but it just won’t find that illusive ltserial file. Yes I’m being sarcastic.

I have the kernel source installed, actually I have everything installed I can think of.

Any reason why this would be the case? Anyone?

hehehehe It only took a couple of beers in the warmth of my home and persistance. I am typing this from Mandrake 10 Community kernel 2.6.3-4!!!! Yippee.

Technion linmodems site discontinued?!
 

Hello guys, I read the whole thread about compiling and installing an LT winmodem under Mandrake 10.0 and appreciate the helpful systematic responses of everyone, particularly Tormented and _Invader.

The problem is however, that the Technion website on linmodems seems to be down (perhaps discontinued) and I cannot download neither the ScanModem unitility, nor the source package of drivers for LT Winmodem (ltmodem-2.6-alk-2.tar.gz). Any ideas how to get these packages? Can someone e-mail me one or both of these?

The chipset of my modem is based on Lucent 1646T00 and the modem is
LT WinModem 56k Data+Fax or Agere F-1156IV/A3
It works perfectly in Windows 98.

It's about time that Connexant releases this to mandrake, after all it's in their interest as it is selling their chipsets.

It's a passive modem and uses cheap chipsets with manufactorers providing drivers for Windoze, a refusal to supply linux drivers appears as a restraint of trade.

Lets have a site to direct complaints to Connexant for this deliberate and illconceived attitude to business?

Download ltmodem-8.31a8.tar.gz. It has the scanmodem script and a build_rpm script that will automatically compile the driver and make an rpm for easy installation.

Though your post came kind of late for me, it is very precise. I did that yesterday - the ltmodem-8.31a8.tar.gz did in fact contain everything needed except for some Mandrake stuff (pciutils, kernel-source, wvdial) that I installed along with rpmdrake. Everything was quite straightforward and I would recommend everyone to start with (and stick to) the instructions in the 1ST-READ text file. The sequence of commands can be summarized as

1. Download and decompress (anywhere) ltmodem-8.31a8.tar.gz

2. Open 1ST-READ and read along

3. ./scanmodem and confirm that your modem is among those supported (this will also be done automatically in the process below)

4. ./build_module

5. ./ltinst2

6. ./autoload

7. ./checkout

8. Correct the /etc/wvdial.conf file as instructed after checkout, fill in the parameters of your dial-up account in wvdial.conf and take out the ";" before the last 3 lines
(I laso needed to make a soft link of /dev/modem to /dev/ttySLTM0, but this was out of the normal sequence)

9. ./wvdial will dial out and establish a connection
I still have to figure out how to dial from KDE, since the Control Center -> New connection still does not work...
