KDE Crash Dilema!

Hello to everyone-

I've come for some advice..
due to a small problem I'm having with my O.S.

TECH STATS

Here is the problem>>>

When I boot up linux everything seems fine, until it attempts to load the kde environment. The KDE DAEMON- THE KDE Crash Handler window comes up over and over again until nothing works on the computer!

/////////// -window description-
Short description

The application KDE Daemon(kded)crashed and caused the signal 8 (SIGFPE).

What is this?

An application mostly recieves the SIGFPE signal due to a bug in the application. The app was asked to save its documents.

What can I do?

You might want to send a bug report for this app.
///////////

It just recently started doing this and I havent installed any new apps on the computer, its no internet ready so I don't see why anything could be going wrong right now. :scratch:

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated.

Blackholes squirt

I like the name . I reckon blackholes compress in so hard that a squirt of star material goes out in both polar directions. This is and was the real big bang effect.
Strange physics in there

Now on the linux front as its just started happening I would suspect an unscheduled shutdown might have lost a few nodes in your file system .

Others might suggest courses to check but if you want to get it back up running quickly I would say reinstall from the DVD and dont format hda6 the user partition as this will keep your settings intact. Back up anything else critical to DVD

Or if you don't want a complete reinstall, start in console mode (you must have it in lilo or grub) or with another desktop if you have, for instance, Gnome installed, or any other way, even if KDE failed, you can use control-alt-F1 to open the prompt for instance #1. Then, as root, urpme kde-base, uninstall all that you can see with KDE inside.

If you don't have precious personal settings, delete ~/.kde folder

Then, simply, reinstall kde, uprmi kde etcetera (kde-base for a starter).

That must be a bit faster than a complete system reinstallation, but that's yours to see of course :)

This has problably been fixed by now, but I wanted to make a post to anyone else who might also have the same problem.

I had a similar problem, and after un-installing 'kat' the problem went away. 'kat' is a desktop indexing tool. If you hve problem doing anything in the desktop due to the kde crash, try logging in as another user, or don't start X and remove 'kat'.
