Huawei Hi link E353 dongle from 3 mobile problems in Mandriva
Hello,
I'm new to Mandriva, have used ubuntu and mint before but due to some problems with my last mint installation and a free Mandriva 2011 cd with linux magazine i decided to try it! Like what Mandriva has to offer just wish i could get my head around a few of the problems i'm encountering! Just another learning curve i guess :)I used to have Vodafone mobile broasdband, which worked fine with Mandriva, straight out of the box with no problems. I recently went over to 3 mobile in Ireland and can't seem to get it to work properly. I've set up a connection in network manager under mobile broadband tab and think everything is ok there and lsusb says: Bus 002 Device 007: ID 12d1:1f01 Huawei Technologies co., Ltd When i plug the dongle in green light flashes then blue then i get steady blue which indicates that it is connected but network manager says it's disconnected and firefox wont load any pages! Wondering if i need to install gnome-ppp-Gnome 2 front-end to wvdial!? but can't try it as no internet! kppp is installed, any help/ideas would be welcome, thanks |
Hello agsain, Have been looking at other posts on this subject and tried a few different things but still no joy. Just wanted to mention that when i boot from an earlier kernel i can see the dongle in Device notifier as HiLink when i open it there's a linux install folder, tried suggestions there got no where, couldn't change permissions to make file executable and just spent another 2 hours going around in circles! Should it really be so difficult!? I really like Linux as opposed to windows but am not a programmer so find most of what i'm typing into command line makes no sense and i really don't know what i'm doing, any help would be so much appreciated. :banghead:

Hi, with the mandriva tools, kppp and gnome-ppp are probably not required.
The kernel module "option" I used to use for my (old and nolonger in use, I have 3 huawei/vodafone) usb modem. type Code:
lsmod | grep option From my experience, the Mandriva control center may show the connection as up when it's down and visa-vis. Mageia-1 is very similar. You could try a few things, in a command line terminal like konsole(kde4) Code:
ifdown ppp0 && ifup ppp0 Code:
netstat -an Code:
route So, if the module is loaded and the modem lights up as you described (working properly) then it could be your firewall or the dns lookup that is stopping you from getting web pages. Do you have a squid proxy server setup? Please post back with questions. Regards Glenn |
Hello Glennspref, thanks for reply,
hre's what happened when i did lsmod | grep option [root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep option [root@localhost ~]# does this mean it's loaded? 'ifdown ppp0 && ifup ppp0' gave me usage: ifdown <device name> device notifier says no devices available! 'route' gave me [root@localhost ~]# route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface and 'netstat -an' gave a very long list of mostly unix 2 and unix 3 STREAM CONNECTED with I -Node number and path. wasn't sure if copying the list here would be any use, but happy to do so if would help. As far as i can see i don't have a firewall set up yet. 'Everything (no firewall)' is the only box checked. Haven't set up a proxy server at any time so am assuming i don't have 'squid proxy server setup' Sorry for having such little understanding of my operating system and how it works  Thanks for your help |
That's OK.
any external ip addresses with netstat -an ? If there was route would show it too. The connection will be called ppp(n). It seems you do not have a network. You need a dhcp client, and your dns lookup. These were the addresses I was looking for with route and netstat. I would remove the connections in the network gui, then reboot. After reboot, go back to setup the network gui. select GPRS/Edge/3G, for your modem. During this install process, you may require your Mandriva dvd, for dhcpd and others. Unless you have been given a static ip address from 3 mobile, then select the dhcp for automatic ip and the same for dns. (The firewall is not a problem, just turn it on later when you get connected.) Go through the rest of the process, when asked if you want to connect now, say no and reboot. check the "option" module is loaded (with modem plugged in) see how you go. Regards Glenn |
Thanks Glenn,
Didn't see any external ip addresses with net stat but not realy sure what i'm looking for, nothing called ppp(n) there anyway. Did as you suggested with the network gui, selected GPRS/Edge/3G and it said 'no device can be found for this connection type' lsusb shows the device is there. The device notifier shows it as HiLink and when i open it there's a folder called 'linux_mbb_install' when i open that there's a readme.txt that says How to install 1. Keep your right is "root" 2. Run "./install" in TERMINAL to install 3. if you have installed before , intend to the installing information when i did this it said, 'No such file or directory' went to properties for 'install' to check 'Is executable' box and it said 'Could not change permissions for /media/HiLink/linux_mbb_install/install' When i unplugged the dongle i got these messages which don't mean a lot to me but wondered if they give any clues "Message from syslogd@localhost at Apr 5 11:01:27 ... kernel:[2093.012599] last sysfile: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb2/idVendor Message from syslogd@localhost at Apr 5 11:01:27 ... kernel:[ 2093.012678] Process umount (pid:3850, ti=e4f76000 task=f39fe580 task.ti=e4f76000) Message from syslogd@localhost at Apr 5 11:01:27 ... kernel:[ 2093.012681] Stack: Message from syslogd@localhost at Apr 5 11:01:27 ... kernel:[ 2093.012701] Call Trace: Message from syslogd@localhost at Apr 5 11:01:27 ... kernel:[ 2093.012596] Oops: 0000[#1]SMP Thanks for your help Glenn, sue |
OK, we need to be sure that the kernel module is loaded at boot.
to check type lsmod, and either pipe the output through grep to find "option" (without the quotes). as b4, Code:
lsmod | grep option. you can put the name of modules to load in a file called /etc/modprobe.preload Code:
# /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time. then reboot to see if it worked. to check, once again, lsusb (Huawei) and lsmod (option) now try the install script again. |
Hi Glenn, Thanks but didn't get very far with last instructions:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep option |
You will need to be root/administrator to make those changes.
If you can, you need to log in as root. Easiest option, or sudo, su to root with a cli. (you will need the root/admin password to do this.) Regards Glenn |
MSEC is the program that looks after the security of the system and also the logging of such a system.
goto the MCC. select "security" select "configure system security" select "Security Settings" Here you may set what kind of security you require. Hope this helps, ask more? regards Glenn |
@siouxzieq, have you managed to get this device working yet? ...I have bought the same modem with the same ISP. Mine works with slackware, it creates a device name eth* ...hope to hear back from you.

Tia. One other thing I remember with Mandriva Control centre, go into hardware, where you can inspect the details of what the system has found. Now,... This is where I have found a bit of Mandy Magik! When I go to "browse my Hardware" MCC says wait! I need to install some Packages first, this could take a while..... that's usually when wvdial, some usb-storage, and cups-print.<edit> get installed with the system deps intact.</edit> Maybe that's what suzy needs to invoke. Just a guess |
Hi Glennspref and Cod liver oil, thanks for your help and suggestions, sorry haven't replied sooner, have been boggged down with packing and moving house for the past month! I actually gave up on Mandriva and decided to install SUSE 12.1 KDE unfortunately had similar problems with Network manager in that distro as well, started investigating on SUSE forums and found some helpful advice:
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/g...onnection.html I followed the suggestions here i.e. added the widget for Network manager (but it's a blank page with a question mark on it) I then switched from "ifup" to controlled by Network manager in Yast and rebooted....didn't make any difference so followed the next instruction: Experience with 12.1 shows that after such a switch, you might need to reboot, or at least to run Code: /etc/init.d/network restart to get it working properly. I entered the code and got "re-directing to systemctl" but nothing changed, the network manager widget is still blank and it says 'Networkmanager is not running please start it' Guess i need to post in SUSE forum for answers on how to do this! I really like SUSE and think I'll stick with it would just love to be able to go online and get all updates to make it work properly! Am thinking the problems with Network manager in Mandriva must be similar to problems in SUSE? |
Hi, getting back a bit,
Quote:
Is "/media/HiLink/linux_mbb_install/install" a .sh (shell script) file, or an exe (m$win)? It's not because of mandriva, it's the firmware the isp distributes, Mostly Only Windows support. If you can get it working on a windows machine, all the required info may be found, like, dns hostname: company.country (bigpond.au) and static ip addresses for dns 1 and 2 and dhcp and/or IP details. And dialer code. If you use kde, whatever distro, you can make it work by hacking the scripts, This is what I had to do a few years ago. Sorry I've been offline, moved house myself. Regards Glenn |
