Couple of questions about mandrake 9.1 kernel
OK, I wanted to compile a new kernel, do I have to use a special kernel for mandrake? I looked at the kernel version and it's 2.4.24-0.13mdk. Does that mdk at the end stand for something important, or would I be able to upgrade to a 2.6 kernel?

The mdk at the end stands for the fact that Mandrake have applied a number of patches to the 2.4.24 kernel tree. These are in fact quite extensive, and without these patches you may well lose support for certain hardware devices that are not supported by the vanilla kernel.
In short, unless you know what you are doing you are far better off waiting for Mandrake to provide RPMs of a 2.6 kernel and installing that. You might well find that such an RPM already exists in Cooker. |

you can get the source for the mandrake kernel. It's on CD3 - look for kernel-source and install that. You can mess with that.
BTW, there is a kernel update to 2.4.21-0.25mdk. It's a security update. |
Guys, I want to recompile my kernel to add webcam support/latest ALSA drivers and take out some stuff I don't use - can you give me the URL for Dr Ozz's guide? I can't find it....

Dr Ozz's guide? The URL anyone?? Can't find it by searching here on linuxquestions.org

Sorry puppy, I went Googling and still can't find it. Skyline, if you have a link that would be help full. I have been looking for a good guide to kernel compilation as well.
