Changing window colors

Hi,

I'm using Mandriva 2005 LE, on Gnome. Is there a way to make the default white color of windows to slightly more gray? So that all applications that use white as background (e.g. Writer, Firefox, etc) use the new "white" background? The thing is, my LCD has strong background light. It's possible to do in WinXP, so I'm wondering if it's possible to do in Linux.

Windows is less modular than linux - therefore some things are easier to do.

If you change the theme colours, then all apps that use the theme colours will be changed.

So, is it possible or not? If it is, how?
