Acquiring Mandrake 10

Hey all,

I was wondering, how do I get a copy of Mandrake 10 CE. I searched online and says that you have to pay for a copy but I thought with it being Linux, that it is Open Source and is free. If it is free, could anyone point me to a website of FTP site I can download it from.

Thanks,
DaveThePuzzled

Givvrrrr!

DaveThePuzzled 05-22-2004 11:58 PM

Thank you, vectordrake:D

I will go there to download Mandrake 10 CE when I can, which will be soon. Now all I need a some software that will burn the ISO Images onto CD's. I am thinking about Nero but I am not sure if it does that.

Take care,
DaveThePuzzled

It will. Be sure to choose the "burn iso to cd option"

DaveThePuzzled 05-23-2004 12:21 AM

Great! :D

Thank you again vectordrake! :D

Wait until M10 is installed. You'll have K3B, the easiest burner in the world, IMO. Burns perfect ISOs every time (but it does have a weakness for bin/cue files - ilegal vcd's anyhow! )

Awesome!

I do wonder though. I play a lot of games and I am curious if they would even run in Linux. I guess I could check with the manufacturers to be sure.

vectordrake 05-23-2004 09:26 AM

Good idea. Some likely will. Some will not. Take a look at the WINE project and WineX.

BRoscoL 05-23-2004 01:10 PM

Yay for WINE... definetly great for running the Winblows games in 'Nix without switching.

I bought a copy of the May 2004 "Linux Format" magazine to get my copy of Mandrake 10.0 Community. Distro came free with the magazine. There's versions with both CD-ROM and DVD. I don't have a burner on my laptop (I'm travelling) so it was easier to go to Barnes and Noble for it.

Great! Thanks vectordrake!

I am a big gamer and I was being told by some co-workers that with Linux, if you are a gamer, the switch is not worth making.

I was also told that HP Products do not have any support under Linux either...meaning to drivers or anything :( But I guess I can get the answer to that from all of you here in this Forum :D That what you guys are here for :).

DaveThePuzzled 05-24-2004 05:07 AM

Come to find out about my All-in-One printer, it has some drivers from sourceforge.com as an open source but hp does not provide technical or email support for it. Funny, isn't it?

vectordrake 05-24-2004 05:03 PM

My understanding is that the HP all-in-one has a better linux driver than what shipped for Win. Better color, I think. That's what's making me save for the psc1210.

You'll find some games run better with Linux - like Quake III and UT

HP PSC 1210

Hey vectordrake,

The HP PSC 1210 is an awesome all in one at a good low price. I saw a price on it for like $99 at http://www.hpshopping.com under the All-In-One category and first option.

Thanks for the link. I actually have seen this model for sale a lot at some of the chains that have branches around here, like Compusmart, Staples, and Wacky Wheatleys(that's how they answer the phone, with a manic sounding voice, too!LOL) and they have had some "after rebate" specials that sweeten the deal even more. I had become disillusioned with inkjet printers because of their high cost after the sale - $100 in cartidges is robbery! I was gonna save up for a laser printer, but they are $600+ for the cheapest color one (HP ones are the best ones supported by Linux, BTW). A friend has this model and he likes it a lot and has said that it semms to go on and on with its ink. That's what is the selling point for me. I'd rather pay $300 for a printer that costs me $100/yr than $100 for one that costs me $200/yr. How is the ink consumption?
