Windows Questions
 

I have noticed an increasing number of Windows specific questions arising. Because we are, for the most part, helpful types these questions tend to be answered. But they do tend to clog up the other forums and you can often see posters getting a bit "testy" that someone registers on a Linux forum to ask a Windows question.

Would it be possible to have a Windows forum? You could put in a disclaimer - something like "feel free to post your Windows questions, but as this is a Linux forum we can't guarantee an answer".

If posts here are not part of the '0 replies' count then it would be a matter of personal preference whether to answer. You could even post a few links to Windows forums as long as they returned the favour!

Well, there are time's I'd prefer a Linux user's answer to a MS droid's answer to questions..most of the time, actually. (MS Certs are largely based on "what menu is x in--type of questions, not actual knowledge about what makes/why things work.) Still, this is LinuxQuestions, and redundancy is something we could all use less of. Of course, to be redundant, I'll give the same answer I did a while ago.

Basically, it costs money to run this site. Bandwidth, storage, time, effort, etc., all cost something. The moderators are busy enough with the Linux questions. Adding Windows questions would just add to those costs. While it might bring people in (who knows more about computers than your average Linuxer? :) ), it would likely be a pointless drag on the site. To add a bit more redundancy, I'm sure the folks in charge would be happy to take up your idea if you were willing to make a sizable donation...it's almost Christmas, and I hear a couple of them could use a Lambourghini or two. :D

And yet, in spite of what you say, Windows questions still turn up on this site. These questions need to be moderated, use bandwith, and all the other things you mentioned. Wouldn't a little area of their own (an evolutionary cul-de-sac, if you will) be a good idea? They wouldn't clutter up the rest of the forum and we could then decide whether or not we wished to look at them.

Well for one though, Windows questions are welcome on this site and if its purely a Windows question, it needs to go in the General forum.

But if its a question that is asking about dual booting, samba setup and others along those lines, then its welcome here as well.

Quite frankly I really don't see that many questions that are totally asking about Windows, unless its those versus type threads or news related threads in which half the time I've already seen or read on a "News" site..... :rolleyes:

If you see too many members asking questions, just direct them to ask them at www.windowsquestions.org ;)

i think that windows is free to be mentioned. iot brings up crucial opints of development .

sorry i mean it brings up cruial points of development becuase linux is competing so without the commentsz from windows how would we know how to inprove windows

The reason we don't have a Windows forum is basically not what this site is about. A Windows forum will attract non-Linux users and that is not the goal of this forum. I think it will also direct unwanted traffic to this site. We want to use and save our resources to helping the Linux community, not the Windows community.
I'm not claiming that Windows is bad or we don't want Windows users to use our site, but there are plenty of Windows forums and help sites already out there.
But if users insist to ask a Windows questions on this site, General is suitable just for that.

Fair enough - I withdraw the question. Annoyingly, since I posted this, the number of Windows questions has fallen off. Maybe they come in fits and starts, a bit like the OS! :D

There are a gazillion PDF printers available. Looks like there’s even one built-in on Windows 10 by MS. Personally, I use CutePDF to create PDF files from any Windows-based source.

I also think an “LQ for Windows” is unnecessary.

You can use LibreOffice 'Writer' on Win 10 to export .docx to pdf or print to pdf format.

There are more than enough platforms out there already for noise about Windoze. Please don't be a tool. Leave m$, join us on the light side.

You can kill a Linux forum by poisoning the feed with off topic Windows™ chatter. That tactic is several generations old now. Back in the day, the main target was Apple, but in recent years attacks have increased against Linux and especially GNU Linux. Here is one example about the tactics as they were used against Apple, hosted at the late, great Groklaw's archive of "Comes v Microsoft" also known as the Iowa case:

The Groklaw site appears deindexed from Google and the other remaining search enines. Lost out there were several relevant analyses, one with the title of "66 pages of evilness galore", if I recall correctly.

Speaking of Groklaw, and on the topic of attacks against Linux, the SCO case started 20 years ago and is kind of still dragging on, having shifted over to Xinuos somewhat recently.
