tags for inline code fonts

Currently it is possible to insert a piece of code using \[CODE\] tags. However, when you want to insert just one command like:
"I used grep and awk -f but to no avail" it is an awkward layout to use the \[CODE\] tags.
Usually I use this style myself: "I used grep and awk -f but to no avail", but that is not according to the most common layout as used in books. What you actually want is:
I used grep and awk -f but to no avail,
exactly following the most common conventions in books but that is quite a lot of work.
Would it be possible/feasible/desired to have inline tags for code? So this \[FONT="Courier New"\]\[B\] could be created with one keystroke like there exist a keystroke for bold, underline, etc?
