File Manager of the Year? (presumably non-bash/ls/mv/cp, but maybe that could be a contestant, too.) :)
Utility/System Utility/Something of the Year? A slot or two for the little guys.

If there's FTP server, should there be ftp client?

Maybe science/educational app? Celestia is wild. :)

Distributed app? Folding/SETI?

Flipside, I always thought these

Security App of the Year
Cryptography App of the Year
Hardening App of the Year

were a little close together and might be combined. Maybe not to major security wonks, though.

Looks pretty good overall, though. Just idle suggestions.

How about a Documentation/FAQ category..
eg a source for good Docs...

File Manager of the Year has been added.

I have doubts about 'Windows on Linux App of the Year'. I assume it means apps running under Wine. In such case I don't think that those apps should be honored - it's Wine team work, not the app's developers.

jeremy 12-28-2004 04:07 PM

Mara, that category will include apps to run windows apps (ie. Wine, VMware, CXOffice, Win4lin, etc).

Firewall of the year - on linux boxes? There is only one firewall, or so I thought... iptables

floppywhopper 12-29-2004 05:51 AM

I suppose I mean distros like
smoothwall, openwall, IP Cop, Monowall ( BSD ),
etc etc

floppy

scuzzman 12-29-2004 06:06 AM

I thought those were all iptables frontends

jeremy 12-29-2004 09:50 AM

Joey.Dale - We have MTA of the year.

As for the security issue, we could possibly change the "Hardening App" category to Hardening App/Security Distro. Thoughts?
