Rdesktop kicks butt!
 

Hey all,

I just wanted to say how cool Rdesktop is.

I use it to get a remote terminal server session to a Windows 2000 server I support. It runs great. It's even faster than the stock Windows TS client on a Windows box.

For those of you who haven't used it, I just created an icon on my desktop that launches "rdesktop" via command line with the proper information like domain name and username. I then supply my password when it prompts me :)

Then bamm. I have a Full screen Win2k server desktop over my linux desktop...


Man...how cool :)

where do you get this?

I also use it for control my Win2000 server at work from my Linux here at home, it looks very nice, i think rdesktop is lighter and faster than the original TS client for Windows.

I would agree with you.

I love it.

I love that I can just put a bunch of switches in the alias on the desktop and it runs like a champ :)

Rdesktop IS cool, but I have this odd square black box around my mouse pointer. I'm running KDE 3.0.5a on RH 2.4.20 updated to latest X libraries.. Does anyone else have 'the box'? if not, what are you running ?

I am a newbie to Linux and have just installed Mandrake 9.1 on my PC at home. I am trying to get a remote terminal server session to my work PC. I have done this before with Windows XP Pro on my home PC and now am trying to do the same with Mandrake so I can be Windows Free...........at least at home. I downloaded rdesktop last night and installed it but I think I am still missing something. Here is what I am doing:
1. Using dial-up, I connect to my companies network
2. open up a terminal window and attempt to launch desktop
with the following cmd: ./rdesktop myPCNameAtWork
3. I wait for a few seconds and I get a message telling me that
there is no server with that name or something along those
lines

Do you have any ideas or could you tell me the exact steps I need to take in order for this to work? I also noticed that I have an application on my KDE menu....Networking....Remote Access and tried using this application too and was not successful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still getting the black box around my cursor.. are you running kde or gnome? WHY AM I BEING TORTURED !?

sounds like your DNS is not resolving. bring up a terminal window and attempt to 'ping' your work pc by name - if that fails, try pinging by ip. if the ping by name works, your problem is with rdesktop. if the ping by name fails, your problem is with dns, and you can still get by using the ip addr. if the ip addr fails, check your subnet mask - you may be defaulting to a class B and your work is a class C, etc.

Thanks for the information. I tried pinging by name and it failed. However, I was able to ping by IP address. I opened up a terminal window and typed: rdesktop myIPAddress and the remote terminal session worked like a charm. I believe I can be windows free now.....

I setup an Icon like Whitehat in less than 5 min. I worked a TS project for work and took hours to install and config TS client on W2K. Can't wait to show the boss! Now only need to get VPN tunnel and I can be Winbloze free at home too!!

How do you switch back to your MDK 9 desktop from your Terminal Services screen without closing the TS window .. Basically is there a way to minimise the TS screen ?

I have a question related to this thread about an application that came with my copy of Mandrake 9.1 called Remote Desktop Connection.

While I know how to view my assigned IP address in Windows, I don't know how to do this in Linux. This is the first part of my question.

The next part of my question is this; the Remote Desktop Connection is asking for an address and display number. What is the display number, and how to do find out what my display number is?

Hey Sax,
To view your IP in Linux just go to the command line and type: ipconfig
this will give you your ip and lots of other network info (netmask/broadcast address etc.)
or ... you could just (still at the commnad prompt) type:
ping yourhostname
this will also return your ip. Control c will end the ping, otherwise it will continue pinging.

My question to all,
I use VNC for remote desktop in my windoze environment. How does VNC compare to Rdesktop?

I appreciate the post, but ipconfig does not work on a Mandrake system. I know it does work on a Windows system, however.

I have since found that if you go into the Mandrake Control center, you are able to view your IP address in the Network and Internet connection by looking at the eth0 properties.

I believe there is a similar command for linux that will give you the IP address that you can run in the console. I believe the command is /sbin/ifconfig

At this time, I am still struggling with getting Remote Desktop, or any flavor of vnc to work on my systems. I have posted another thread recently on the Network board, and the answers have been helpful, but I still have some work to do.
