Trying to run photoshop in wine. Install, but wont run.
System is suse 9.1. Kernel is 2.6.5-7.75-default. kde 3.2.2. Wine is 20040213-41. Photoshop is 7. No windoze at all.
I could be able to install it till the end. But when I try to run photoshop, I get a small window saying "Success" with only one button OK. I click ok and the window goes away. Nothing more happens. Also, I tried to do echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield as said in a previous thread, but I get bash: /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield: No such file or directory Smaller win programs can run, like wordweb or putty. Win commander also runs. But photoshop won't run. Can someone help me? |
Okay, the only recommendation is I have is to check out crossover, it's a really good product and I've never had trouble running flash mx. Its one of the very few software packages worth buying (I like flash, i would buy photoshop but, i'm a novice at it so the gimp works fine :). Also, it has a student discount which is nice for us poor college students.

I'll second that. For $40 crossover (version of wine) takes out all the work and photoshop 7 (and MS Office) installs and works well. I recently installed photoshop here on my mdk 10 box... I also removed it soon after as I prefer Gimp, but that's another story :-)

Gimp is very nice program... but it miss one thing that photoshop has (or i cant find it) it cant add options to layer like you know: drop shadow, bevel, and othres...
|
i got it working under 20030813... theres a detail on how to get it working at frankscorner.org i think..
one thing i dont undserstand.. some progs work on certain vine verions right. so that means you will need to particular verions to run that prog... but you can only have one wine version installed? |
I believe Photoshop 7 was working fine a couple of months ago with an older version of wine, but one of the updated versions must have meddled with it.
Go with CrossOver office, it's easy to use straight out of the box. Plus you're contributing to Wine as well as CrossOver, as they contribute some of their code to Wine ever now and again. |
This is a known bug in wine with Photoshop 7. It is fixed in the version 20040615. Please try the newer version.
|
may i ask what these programs are? "Wine" and "Crossover"
do they allow windows programs to run on linux?! |
Yes, mostly. Some programs do not successfully run. See www.winehq.org (there's a link to CrossOver Office there too).
|
Crossover and winex are comercial versions of wine. Codeweavers crossover 3.0 is about $40 and is it runs photoshop 7 - it's in it's certified list or whatever... I ran it hear easily.
Trransgaming cedega (winex) is the gaming version of wine and it cost $15 and up ($5/month) IT runs quite a lot of win games. Wine runs a lot of apps too. It's free but can be hard to set up sometimes. www.codeweavers.com www.transgaming.com www.winehq.org |
Ok paying for the comercial verions that work well is an option if you have a credit card and some money.. but I still think we shouldnt depend on them for all our software to work..
Its like using windows .. I've been usiing it for so long, almost everything is done for you.. you dont learn much about your computer that way. linux on the other hand you have to know much more to be able to use it. I think if most people dont depend on the comerical versions so much and use the free software wine would be a much better program then it is today. |
Try not install image ready/image ready plugins. They caused problems for me. I use crossover office 3 though.

Personally, of course, I consider things like Gimp and OOo to be better, but not everyone is in the same position. |
hmmm i got this vine program
Photoshop wouldn't work i got that "Success!" problem.... you suggest getting a different version? is there a way to let the windows apps access the internet? version is: Wine 20040213 |
Okay, example. With the crossoever office version of wine I can install IE if I want and it will access the internet. I can also install games in winex and they can access the internet fo online play.
