fsck and lost hard drive space

Hi,
I have a strange scenario in which my root filesystem seems to have a lot more free space than indicated but df shows that I have much less. I thought that there was a problem and that fsck should solve it, but when I did run fsck, it told me that there were no problems and didn't reclaim the lost space. Here's the output of df:

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb20 6048320 5716248 24832 100% /

The filesystem in use is ext3. Any ideas? Thanks for your time...

This might explain what's happening.
