cursor in suse 9.0

In suse 9.0, with kde 3.1.4, The old ways of fixing the cursor no longer work. The setting in the Control Center never did work. The sets from kde-look.org only have very limited functionality since suse 8.2. The method, given in this forum, of editing /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme, has no effect at all. If I don't get a better cursor I'm going to go blind. Any suggestions? Please?

Here's the solution. It may even work in other distros. the Suse Yast tool has an editor for /etc/sysconfig in the system section. xcursor is under the Desktop entry. If you have other cursors installed, you can use this to point to them. I haven't had the time yet to see what it really does. The cursors are in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons.
