Can I track URL usage through linux?

I have a linux gateway and I have been asked to capture data that can be placed into an excel spreadsheet to analyse internet usage on the LAN. I have been looking for apps to do this but I can't seem to find anything. Can anyone suggest one?
TCPdump seems to be my only solution at this point, but it is so crude a tool.

Using a squid proxy server would provide that information as well as a few other benefits.

Problem with squid is, most of our sites are internet direct sites, which means I can not filter through traffic through squid, unless you are suggestion I place squid on each gateway.
