My HP 2600 printer stopped printing, and their isn't a printer model now in the settings? the error message says the printer is paused? Now, I just see a"generic printer" when I hit the print tab, but there isn't a printer connected in the settings. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What information does the panel menu on the printer provide you about the printer status?

How is the printer connected? If it is a networked printer, can you ping it?

If it is a multi-function printer, can you still scan/copy with it?

How old is the printer? It is a harsh reality that stuff wears out.

The message says CUPS server is in error. This is what comes up: /run/cups/cups.sock
I can scan/copy fine.
The printer is connected directly by network.
I don't understand ping.
I bought the printer in 2017.

@frankbell: Faulty hardware won't cause the printer configuration to disappear.

@sudo1: Most likely you'll need to reconfigure CUPS again. Not a big deal. I assume this printer model was supported by the HPLIP driver, so check that package is still installed, and then run
Code:

hp-setup
to reconfigure.

Thanks! It works now!

I appreciate your help!

Look up the man page then. It's a very useful command. You use it to test a network connection. For example, if you can't connect to a particular site with your browser, you can ping it to see if it has gone down. If you can't get onto any sites at all, you can test the connection to your router by pinging it and the connection of the router to the web by pinging a known public ip address. And if you have a networked printer, you can ping that.

All that ping actually does is to send a stream of control codes which the site is supposed to echo back. No echoes means no connection.
