my favorite av for windows; eset nod32 released a version of their av in beta a year ago and right now they are in their 2nd or 3rd beta. Whilst in beta; its free to test.

are you still using fedora 10 ?
if so it is a unsupported version and has been past it's "End Of Life" for the last year.
install the current fedora 14
and if so MS viruses are things i would mot worry about
Rootkits i WOULD WORRY ABOUT !! on that unpached kernel.
If you really take a bit of care you do not need any anti-virus for your system. And you need to know what your requirements are to have a firewall. Firewalls will not stop your system from being infected with viruses, trojans, malwares and spywares and what not.
Your question is enough vague for us for not giving to the point solutions.

i dont use AV on windows... only firewall... as most hackers access or "phone home" nastys are virus and linux doesnt suffer with them then perhaps i dont need a firewall... perhaps only to prevent port scanning etc - i have hardware firewall on my router (Netgear DG834GT) - does ubuntu have a firewall built in like windows?
Windows surely needs a AV. Ubuntu should not need a AV as it does not allow root logins on GUI by default. You can use firewall on Ubuntu. But if you need a GUI mode configuration tool, you should install shorewall or ufw or something similar. These are available in the repositories. And router may not be a firewall device on its own. It just provide very basic capabilities.
You should be running a firewall. I would also periodically check for rootkits with rkhunter and chkrootkit. Antivirus is usually optional, but it depends on your network ... if you have Window$ machines, do use clamav or something.
Personally i dont think you "need" a firewall on linux,
but if it makes you sleep better at night here's a link that you might like. http://beginlinux.wordpress.com/2008...-firewall-gui/
I never personally used, but from what i heard is pretty straight forward...plus its simple,
which is always a plus in my books.
Hopefully someone here had a more in-depth experience with it and can provide you a better feedback on it.
