Will 2.5 and/or XF86 "5" support 100Hz or higher refresh rates?
 

Hello all:

(Struggling newbie here). Any guesses here as to
the potential for higher & easier to configure
refresh rates in Linux 2.5, and/or in XF86 5.0+
when they are fully developed in the coming years?

I'm going to use Linux sparingly over the next 18
months, as my eyes can't take too much of the
85Hz refresh rate cap in my distro. (2.4.18 BearOps, & 4.03 or higher X). I hope, in late 2003, to find a patch or distro that will solve the refresh rate problem.

I did all the normal stuff of entering my monitor's ranges (31-96K, 50-160Hz) in XF86Config-4. I have searched the web a lot for
video modeline generators for X - some claim to have a nice console utility where you change refresh & resolution on the fly - but, none work with my distro, and many don't unpack right in the Kconfigure utility. My distro rep. can't solve the 85 Hz cap either.

Any help, or links to utilities would be greatly appreciated. (Oh yeah, I messed around with BEOS just for fun last week, and it had a great little pop-up window on the desktop where I was able to dial-in 32-bits, 1152 lines, and a little slider that got me up to 90Hz refresh! Not bad for an "extinct" OS. (Rumour has it, that BE might be back). This is what I am really looking for in Linux - a little popup desktop window as in BEOS, where you adjust refresh rate with a simple slider.

right, yeah there was another thread running along side yours that i guess you didn't see. have a look at: http://koala.ilog.fr/cgi-bin/nph-colas-modelines My monitor is now very happily running at 110Hz

I guess either you didn't read the replies or you desire to continue your quest to look for the magic slider.
I don't know of any magic slider programs because I don't use x very often and if I do it's at a fixed resolution/refresh rate.
But if you set your configuration files right you can switch between different modes using the CTRL ALT + and CTRL ALT - keys.
