I am a newbie and I am having problems getting my video card to display correctly. I have a Compaq Presario 5304 that has a SiS 530V integrated video card and I am using a Magnavox 700V monitor. I can get the GUI log in to show but it is huge. I have tried to reset the resolution that resulted with no change. If I do log in the screen is so big that it is unusable. Does any one have any ideas?
I am new to all of this so I am probably missing something simple. Please help! Thank you in advance for your help. Casper |
There are 2 things I would check first.
1) Are you running the right X server? 2) What resolution are you running? |
Jeremy Thank you for your reply and here are the answers to your questions.
I am running the default X server for Red Hat Linux 6.0 and when I setup X I set the resolution for 1024 by 768 at 16 bit color if I drop down to 256 color at the same resolution I get a warning that there is no screen found. Thank you once again Casper |
I am pretty sure the default server does not support that chipset. SiS has made a driver available. You can download it here - http://www.sis.com.tw/support/downlo...x.htm#linuxvga

Jeremy,
Thank you for the info! I will give that a try. If have any more problems I will post again but I think this will work for me. Thanx Casper |
I just wanted to post an update. I got a chance to try what you pointed me to and I wanted to let you know that it did work very well. I can't believe how easy it was to get to work. Thank once again, your forum is a great place for people like me just getting started with Linux. I will tell everyone I know that is thinking about trying Linux to go for it and about your forum for support. I get my questions answered much faster here that other Linux forums, you Rock.
Keep up the great work! Casper |
Thanks!
