Tape Backups and How can i find out the Name (label) of the tape in the drive??

Hello,
Does anybody know if this is possible, i've been having a look around at TAR and cpio a little and searching but haven't managed to find anything that looked as though it might help. I'd like to be able to use some linux standard command to basically request to know the name of the tape that s currently in a local attached tape drive. This is so i can run a script eventually that will be able to alert me and others to the fact that the tapes haven't been changed yet etc etc.

Cheers
