Yes. That is what I said. Linux inside Windows. This is for my hands on experience before I destroy a perfectly good workstation or server.

"apt-get install firefox" does not need and external files for you to download!

And I an pretty sure that andLinux is the reason nothing seems to work right!

There isn't really a "best" distro, but in my experience Ubuntu has been the easiest to install and get running on most computers. Fedora is good too. A good server distro is Debian.

If you are so scared about Linux, at least try a REAL distro in in a VM such as Sun (now Oracle) VirtualBox.

Since you are unaware of the very basic Linux things, I would recommend Ubuntu 9.04 for you to try out !!

I looked at several options, but all were too complexe for me to install. This was my third attempt. I have VMPlayer on this pc for doing so, but I failed at it twice. I would love to have a true dual win/lin install on here, but I have not succeeded at it.

I got started liking Linux when I basically spent all day reading about Linux, the command line, and how it's inner workings are different form Windows, then installing Fedora in a VM.

I ended up using the VM exclusively and almost never touching Windows! After a few days I just installed Fedora and erased Windows completely.

What do you need Windows for all the time that you think Linux cannot provide?

If you can do most stuff on Linux but might need Windows from time-to-time, how about installing Windows in a VM with a Linux host?

I would love to be able to do that. Like I said, I tried twice with VMPlayer. My last attempt was with ADRIANE - KNOPPIX_v6.2.1. I used an ISO, burned the whole file to cd, and could not get anything at all to happen. And it looked soooooo promising in the write-up that I read.

Try something like Fedora or Ubuntu.

One problem with KNOPPIX is that it does not support SATA drives, which almost all new-ish computers have.

It also occurs to me you might do well getting in touch with a local LUG (Linux Users Group). With all the tech people in your area there must be one.

I can think of only one answer: I am fairly accustomed to Windows use, but know nothing about Linux. If all I had on here were Linux, I would not have ever been able to get to this forum. Probably not even have been able to log on.
