print A4-size pdfs to letter-size paper

I'm having trouble printing a pdf that's from the UK (A4) onto US letter-sized paper. I would think there should be a setting, but I can't find one.

Printing with Brother HL-1440 using Ubuntu 7.04.

Adobe Reader 8 just chokes (stops the print job) with either "Shrink to printable area" or "Fit to printable area" chosen.

KGhostView will print the page but chops off the bottom. I don't find any adjust size control with KGhostView.

Is there a solution to this? I don't really want to have A4-sized paper to fit into files etc.

Thanks.

EB
