Please suggest a printer
Ubuntu 22 lts user here
I had an HP laser printer for years, it died. I bought another and couldn't get it to work with Ubuntu - I installed hplip and the whole deal. Please suggest a laser printer, I only need black and white. I need a printer that works easily with Ubuntu - I'm thinking another HP or a Brother. I buy a lot off of Amazon, so if someone could link me to a printer on there that would be even better! |
I would recommend an HP. I don't think any other manufacturers hold a candle HP in terms of Linux support.
You can go to the HPLIP website and check whether a particular model is supported. |
If considering HP, be aware of theCartridge Protection policy. Replacements are not cheap.

Brother printers are Linux-friendly. I have one. But whatever kind of printer you buy, make sure it supports ipp-everywhere, because cups is planning to phase out the present generation of ppd-based printer drivers (including mine!).

IPP-Everywhere printers:

Hi,
I had good success with a brother Printer. No longer have it, so can't remember the model # but it was found and configured automatically by ubuntu and derivatives. I now use HP but it's not laser just ink jet. With your HP you might want to try installing hplip-gui (sudo apt install hplip-gui) and use that tool to install the printer. If it is wireless set it to a fixed IP address. So the address does not change when other items are added to the newwork. good luck. |
I would try to make that printer work. Probably cheaper than buying a new one. What kind of printer is it at all?

Paul Shaffer,
I would follow pan64's advice. Which model of printer do you have? With regard to Legacy printers, have a look at posts #27 and #32 here: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...700/page2.html |

My current HP laserjet (M277dw) will not print with ipp but does with hplip and the scanner cannot be accessed without the plugin. |

I have seen recommendations for the Epson ET-2800.

I vote for HP as well. Not just for the Linux support, but HP printers just seen to work better than other brands I've tried. My last printer was an Epson. Worked well enough under Linux, but if I didn't use it often enough, I had to do a print head cleaning which wasted ink.
