What display/login manager are you using (GDM, KDM, XDM)? Usually there is some display manager configuration option that controls this. A bit more information would help us help you...

FYI, Linux XP uses Gnome/GDM. According to their website, KDE is for hackers and sucks.

Yep, this is a quote from their website:

Forget about KDE. KDE is for hackers and that is why it sucks in end-user oriented distribution.
We are not supporting it in any way. You can install it from Fedora repositories and use it on your own risk.
Uh huh, these are the people I want working on my distro. Sure.

You can set passwords in a terminal.

For the root user: passwd root
OR
su to become root
then passwd

For other users:
passwd <username>

root auto-login

Much of the time, the GUI you are using can log you in automatically, even if you do have a password assigned.
Look through your GUI's options and see what you can find :)

Linux to Ubuntu

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I'm switching from Linux XP to Ubuntu, because Linux XP wants me to activate(register $20 for key).

Anyone available via Messenger that can guide me with installation? I need tutor any time from 8am-3pm central time and 12:30am-2am central time. I'd reformat my pc 3 times already trying to do it myself.

Here's what I did so far:
1 HD w/ 2 Partition w/ with NTFS format

I want to install Ubuntu on the other drive/partition where there isn't file yet, Drive D:\ where C:\ is Windows Vista

Some say I will need Partition Magic. But like i'd said I'd already partition it with Vista for 2. Also Ubuntu also come with it's own partition program that i can't remember, i think it's Gparted.

Anyone available? As soon as I get used to Linux, I will destroy MS.

Thanks from the NewB,
Naut

The Ubuntu installation is pretty simple and straight forward. Put in the disk and boot the system. It will guide you through from start to finish.

Ubuntu Next Step

Help w/ Next Step on Ubuntu

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, here's where I'm stuck at.
Ubuntu Setup:
Language
Location
Keyboard
My Info
Prepare Disk Space:
1. Resize IDE1(MASTER),partition#1
(HDA1)and use freed space.
2. Erase Entire IDE1(HDA) 82.3GB
3. Manually Edit Partition

Option1 is default at 54%(19.9G), Assuming it's trying to resize the drive that Windows is on.

Option2 I dont think is a good idea

Option3 Came up with Gparted. It shows 2 box. Left box show empty. Right box show used space. Must be windows file. Here is what is say:

Mount Point---Size---Partition--------Reformat
/media/HDA1...39G....partition/hda1....[_]
/media/HDA2...38G....partition/hda2....[_]

I'm thinking I should use #3 for manually but what is my next step?
