no modem with Redhat Linux 9
Hi guys. I'm really new to Redhat Linux 9 and i'm really hard to understand what people are telling me. Redhat Linux 9 does not recognize my modem. The name of my modem is PCTEL Platinum V. 90 modem. I download the pctel-0.9.6 drivers. I guess when i open up the terminal windows. I have to type some commands. Some people are telling me that i have to be in the location. I'm not sure but i think i have to be in the place where i extract the files to. I don't understand how to get in the location. It seems like what ever i type. I get no such file or directory. Can someone please help me with the modem drivers? I'm a tough person to understand. It would be better if someone e-mail me back right a way. Thank You very much.

there is a howto at the beginning of the software forum
on this site that explains many basic things. you should read that. |
I did not see any beginner howto's.

I keep on getting the same error message. tar: pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz: cannot open: No such file or directory. tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now. This is what i typed in.
tar -xvf pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz Do you know why i'm always getting this message? |
you have to type the full path to the file. that means you
have to know where it is. you can find / -name pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz -print then cd /where/file/is then tar zxvf pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz then cd pctelwhatever it is then you are there, and can begin. |
nope still got the same error. This is what i typed in.
find/ -name pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz -print I got no such file or directory. |
are you sure you downloaded the driver?? have you extrcted it??

The question you ask me did i download the driver. yes i download. The second question you ask me did i extract it. The answer to that is, I try to. I don't know did i do it right but i gave it my best try. On the other hand, When i open up the Terminal windows. I don't know how to go into the location where i try to extract the files. Can you help me?? Thanks guys.

tell us the exact location where you extracted the files... and we'll try to be of more help... :)
|
Open Konqueror or Nautilus, right click the file, you should get the option to exract it.
To navigate in terminals is broadly the same as in Windows/DOS. Try cd (for change directory) /home/name/whatever. Normally things are downloaded to your home directory. so: cd /home/username/directory/file.tar.gz. When you extract the file, there should be a readme. |
ei, i dont know you but your a fellow LQ member so... happy bday XavierP... :)

The Rute Handbook has an enormous amount of info for Linux - have yourself a read.
